The Cow Lightens a Family’s Burden Amid Fear

The Voskanyan family lives in the village of Chinar, Armenia, amid daily unrest caused by the fear that Azeri snipers may at any moment break the cease-fire between Armenia and Azerbaijan and they will be shot at again. The village is located directly at the bottom of the hill from where the snipers watch the inhabitants, and there has been sniper fire over the last year. The Heifer project brought them a cow that eases some of the family's burden.

Smiling Garlic Brings Profit to Armenian Youth

Fourteen-year-old Avetis Harutyunyan, from Verin Getashen, Armenia, received a seed grant through a Heifer project to start his garlic business. His first attempts to sell weren't successful, so he implemented a marketing plan that worked like a charm and brought big profits in his first season.

Read to Feed – Let’s Say It Together

Elementary students gathered in the small auditorium of Shanghai Jincai High School International Division in China’s Pudong New Area on March 25, 2013, to kick off the school’s second Read to Feed program. This year's participation has doubled, promising an increase in donations to Heifer International.

Joint Workshop for Georgian and Armenian Veterinarians Successful

The Heifer International project, Animal Health Management in Cross-Border Areas of Armenia and Georgia, held a joint workshop for veterinarians in Borjomi, Georgia, April 4-5, 2013. Andris Zalitis, veterinary-surgeon of Vidzemes Veterinaries Service, Latvia, led the workshop in cooperation with the Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development foundation and with the financial support of Austrian Development Cooperation.

Heifer's Work in Bolivia's Chocolate Forest

Heifer is working with communities in the Bolivian Amazon to harvest cacao for the production and marketing of chocolate, while preserving the health of the forest. By adding sheep, poultry and fish to their regular cacao activities, these families have alternate sources of income and nutrition.
