From the Field

Heifer Cambodia project participant Reoun Theourk, 31, left school in the sixth grade because of her family's poor living conditions. In 2011, she was selected to be a Literacy Facilitator and began changing her life with the help of Heifer Cambodia and Disability Development Services Program. Her community rewarded her efforts and elected her as a village chief.
Heifer is working with communities in Honduras and Guatemala to create livestock and agriculture businesses, which help residents overcome poverty and malnutrition. Pierre Ferrari, Heifer's President and CEO, visited these projects in March 2013 and attended a Passing on the Gift® (POG) ceremony in Guatemala. There, project participants gave him a goat to symbolize their gift to Heifer to pass on to communities around the world.
March 13, 2013, will not soon be forgotten by Maria Rosa Lewitzki and Claudete Dupezaki, members of Living Water (Agua Viva), a group of women agroecologists in the community of Gois Artigas, Inacio Martins, Parana, Brazil. On that day, in Brasilia, in the presence of President Dilma Rousseff, the women received the “Rural Women Producers for a Sustainable Brazil” award on behalf of their group. The award, which includes a trophy and a cash prize, is given by the Secretary for Women’s Policies for the President of the Republic.
Heifer Vietnam volunteer Maria Wrabel shares the stories of Heifer Vietnam project participants as they experience their first Passing on the Gift® ceremony.
Vietnam’s total national meat production in 2011 only met about 54 percent of the domestic market demand. Beef production in the Mekong Delta area studied accounted for just seven percent of the country’s production. There is great opportunity for beef cattle production in the Mekong Delta, specifically, and the whole country of Vietnam, in general. This workshop brought project partners and other stakeholders together to discuss the issues and work on a plan to improve the beef value chain.
