LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 5, 2012) – On World Environment Day, Heifer International is proud to be a part of the Green Economy, from Heifer’s LEED Platinum-certified headquarters to its projects around the world that care for the Earth at the same time they improve lives.
The United Nation’s Environment Programme defines the Green Economy as “one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.”
With projects emphasizing energy-saving stoves, biogas, agricultural diversity, or aquaculture, Heifer International enables its project communities to go beyond subsistence to develop commercially viable, market-oriented industries with a focus on reducing environmental harm. At the same time, Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development include training on gender equity, accountability, and Passing on the Gift to keep the efforts going well after those first gifts.
Take Clara Phiri’s family in Mphamba Village, Malawi, recipients of an energy-saving stove. The area has a fuel wood shortage due to local tobacco-growing, charcoal burning, and traditional cooking methods. The new stove enables Phiri’s family to burn wood for eight days - a 125 percent improvement over the old stove. This cuts down on the work involved in fetching firewood, and contributes to a healthier environment. The new stoves are also safer, more hygienic, inexpensive, and, as an added boost to the local economy, use local resources to build.
Heifer International urges you to become a part of the Green Economy starting today. Do your part for the environment in your corner of the world, and help others in another corner improve their lives while improving the environment as well. By supporting Heifer International’s sustainable projects, you can contribute to a better world for all.
