Carmen Suyapa Cruz-Cruz was only 9 years old when her father, like so many other young men, left his family to find work. Edman calls home twice a month, but his family hasn't seen him in 4 years. His wife, Grizelda, is worried. He has been gone for such a long time and she has some serious health problems. She desperately wants him to come home.
Fortunately for the Cruz family soon after Edman left, his parents, Jose and Dominga, received 22 chickens and 2 roosters from Heifer International. “It was an amazing day. We were very happy,” said Dominga. They also received fruit trees and training.
The chickens provide much needed eggs, a staple in the Honduran diet, and manure to fertilize their fruit trees. Currently most of what they raise they consume, but soon the Cruz family will have enough eggs, chickens, fruit and vegetables to sell.
“Poverty here is terrible,” said Jose. “With the support from Heifer we have learned a lot and improved a lot.”
