USA Country Program Going Forward

Heifer USA Message: Our Work Going Forward

Our work will continue to evolve toward an integrated program focused on working across complex local, national and global food systems. While working within a food systems framework, we will continue to work in partnership to support rural and urban farmers to strengthen their numbers and sustainable productive capacity.

We will also emphasize educating consumers on their important role in food systems and the influence they wield when they decide where to shop for food. We will work to raise awareness of the root causes of poverty, hunger and environmental degradation and practical solutions, through Heifer's work and beyond.

We will continue to work with individuals, families, communities and organizations to support systemic change to improve livelihoods of small farmers and the health and nutrition of children. We will also address issues of access for farmers to fair prices for crops, and traditionally marginalized populations to healthy, affordable food. In short, we will be working to make the food system more equitable and accessible for everyone.

As we re-focus our program in areas of highest genuine need, we will concentrate in and around Appalachia, the Mississippi River Delta and the Southwestern United States—but not exclusively in these areas. As we work to create more sustainable, locally-based food systems, we will pursue opportunities to work with indigenous peoples, new and immigrant farmers and in urban agriculture in strategic ways across the country.

Working in solidarity and through community-based development has been at the heart of Heifer's strategy for decades and it will continue to be the approach we pursue moving forward.
