Project Starbucks

Starbucks Partners Passing on the Gift to Farmers in Rwanda

Farmers in Rwanda, including coffee farmers who supply Starbucks, have a great need. According to the U.S. government, approximately 90% of Rwandans engage in subsistence agriculture and 60% live below the poverty line. A cow can provide a family with the much needed security of year-round income and food.

As part of its relationship with Starbucks, Heifer Rwanda will provide pregnant heifers, which will be distributed to families who have been given intensive training in caring for the animals. Families will then "pass on the gift" of the first born offspring of their heifers to other families in the community.

Dr. Efraim Kabaija, Chief of Staff to President Paul Kagame recently said Heifer would play an important role in alleviating Rwanda's crisis of malnutrition. "It's the best way to fight poverty in the rural population of Rwanda."

Starbucks' goal of 30 heifers will improve the lives of not only 30 families, but all the additional families that will benefit through "Passing on the Gift” of firstborn heifers. Your gift to Heifer International will be multiplied many times in years to come.
