The vast majority of the world's poorest people are women.
With your support, Heifer's work provides women an opportunity to take charge of their lives and experience the dignity of self-reliance. Son Sinath, a mother of two from Cambodia, is an inspiring example of what is possible through the gift of an animal and training in its care. "Our condition was very poor," Son Sinath remembers. "We had food shortages every year." Through her involvement in Heifer's project in her village, she now earns in one year what used to take 18 years.
Heifer International's Gift Catalog is on its way to a mailbox near you. When you give a gift from the Most Important Gift Catalog in the World, you're giving something big — the tools for a family to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty and into self-reliance. It's not just a present, it's a gift for a better tomorrow. There are many new gift choices in this year's catalog that are sure to make someone in your life smile.
Heifer has a designated fund for times when disasters affect projects in areas where we work. Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, mudslides and other disasters leave millions of displaced people in their wakes. Families impacted by these events face uncertain futures as they struggle to feed themselves and to rebuild their lives. In Heifer's work around the world, we often partner with vulnerable communities in disaster-prone areas. The Heifer Disaster Rehabilitation Fund provides additional resources when our projects are affected by disasters that stretch their ability to cope. We need your help to be prepared.
Raise awareness for your favorite cause on Blog Action Day...October 15 is Blog Action Day. Since 2007, bloggers from around the world have devoted one day a year to blog about one important global topic. This year's topic is the "Power of We," recognizing the importance of people working together to create positive change in the world.
The Heifer Blog is updated daily with fresh information, discussion and debate on the complex and often conflicting issues of hunger and poverty and caring for the Earth.
In the Garden: Perennials...Perennials are the reliable joys of gardening, sending up new shoots in a barren yard every spring with little or no attention from you. Autumn is the perfect time to plant new ones and do a little upkeep on the old ones.
