A picture of Hope
January 2012
Dear ,

Here’s the story you may know: Heifer’s founder Dan West, while ladling out cups of milk to hungry people during the Spanish Civil War, thought to himself that the families need “not a cup, but a cow.”

The story you may not know: Heifer has vowed to scale up its program impact as its number one priority. Using the same family-oriented, community-based development model, we will help our smallholder famers move from providing for themselves to help feeding the world.

Smallholder farming families grow 70% of the food the world eats every day. Their health, their productivity, their care for the soil and the environment around them is simply critical to our future.

It is believed that we will need to double food production over the next two to three decades. The Heifer model works – it’s proven successful for nearly 70 years – so we need to reach more farming families as rapidly as possible. We need to act now.

This new Heifer pushes the limits of our imagination. We are committed to use the ingenuity of the people with whom we work to define a new standard. We’re inspired by people like Nisha Pariyar, whose government job sewing clothes never made ends meet and provided very little hope. Two short years later, Nisha's future is much brighter after receiving goats from Heifer. Nisha looks at her daughter now and says, “The sky is the limit for her.”

We are still driven by the same mission; we still have the same finely-honed, well researched, impactful agricultural development model. Now we are going to push it to the next level. Never before have we aimed so high. We are challenging ourselves because the global situation demands it.

As you read this month’s newsletter, look with us to the future. As we continue on this journey of change, we need your help! Donors like you have made our work possible for nearly 70 years; we’ll need you for this next step as well.  Every one of us has a role to play in the struggle against hunger and poverty.

Here’s to a new, exciting year,

Nisha PariyarNisha Pariyar has always had a deep desire to provide for her family, but to some in her life, living in poverty was better than a woman earning a household income. Even desperate attempts to increase their household income proved unsuccessful. Nisha’s involvement with a Heifer project marked a turning point. She and her family received goats from Heifer – a gift that turned out to be the perfect start to a new life. This once-hopeless mother now says of her daughter, “The sky is the limit for her.”

Nearly 70 years after that first shipment of cows, Dan West’s spirit and desire to end world hunger remains. Since its inception, Heifer has helped 15.5 million families in more than 125 countries achieve self-reliance. This timeline will show you how Heifer's model has helped change lives over the years.

2012 is the year to resolve to end hunger, and Heifer’s monthly giving program is a great way to do it! Your monthly gifts can add up to 12 flocks of chickens, three goats, or even a full barnyard of animals, all gifts that provide the necessary resources for families to move to self-reliance and beyond.

Heifer has assisted 1.9 million families in the last year – thanks to the contributions of generous donors. What does assisted mean? Heifer’s model enables families to achieve self-reliance, providing the structure for dramatic change. This article breaks it down: how much income does a Heifer family make compared to the average in their country? How does a family’s daily nutrition change? What gains do families have once they begin working with Heifer?

Achieving self-reliance is powerful. But self-reliance is simply a gateway to the life-altering transformation that is possible with the Heifer model. Step with us into the world of Heifer projects and see how a community moves from subsistence to transformation.

January 12 marked two years since the earthquake that devastated Haiti. Visit our blog for stories of renewed hope – including the amazing rescue of a Heifer staffer's sister a week after the earthquake. In the immediate aftermath of the quake, Heifer provided assistance to more than 2,000 victims. Since then, Heifer has created a long-term strategy that will rehabilitate rural communities and provide food security and income opportunities to more than 20,000 families.
