Beyond Hunger: Feast in the Field

“Beyond Hunger: Feast in the Field” will serve as a unique “farm to fork” celebration to raise funds and awareness for sustainable agriculture benefiting Heifer projects in the Arkansas Delta and Nepal. Enjoy a family-style dinner featuring local foods prepared by the award-winning executive chefs from the Capital Hotel and hear from distinguished speakers, Heifer project participants and a special musical performance by Arkansas’ own rising star, Cody Belew.
Come dressed in all-white, snappy casual attire and share an evening of local food and community spirit as we generate awareness and raise funds for this important cause.
Thank you for making the event such a success. Relive the evening on our Flickr photo gallery.
“Charity begins at home,” and since
1971, Arkansas has been
home to
Heifer International. From the
headquarters
in downtown
Little Rock to Heifer Ranch
in
Perryville, this is where
our heart is. We want to
bring the community
together in an effort to
end
hunger and poverty
here in Arkansas and
around the
world. Feast
in the Field will not only
benefit our
programs in
the Arkansas Delta, but
also in Nepal,
directly on
the other side of the world.
Enabling small shareholder
farmers to be sustainable is the
key to overcoming poverty. That is
our mission and
we will not stop until
we end hunger.
A scrawny kid with a big voice, Cody Belew, from Beebe, Arkansas, grew up singing at rodeos, in gospel church houses and anywhere in between that would have him. Raised on a farm, he understands the meaning of work, the importance of livestock and close family ties. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2011, finally realizing his childhood dream.
In January 2012, Cody received the call inviting him to audition for "The Voice." He made it to the top 8 on season three of NBC's number one show and is working on his debut album. His new song, “Say Love” will be available for download on iTunes starting in April 2013. Cody is dedicating all proceeds from the song to Heifer International’s work around the world. Agriculture in Arkansas is largely dependent on commodity crop production and the importation of more labor-intensive food crops from outside the region, providing an enormous opportunity for economic development in the state—especially in the rural sector. Heifer International will implement its Seeds of Change Initiative in Arkansas to help improve the quality of life of its residents by improving community food security and providing opportunities for livelihood security in sustainable agriculture for food production and enterprise development.
Heifer will work with other organizations throughout the state that share our mission of ending hunger and poverty to build collective impact that serves the joint mission of all organizations and the local communities.
The average Nepalese farmer owns fewer than 1.2 acres of land. However, even on such small plots, livestock has the potential to improve diets and increase incomes. For farmers—especially marginalized women—to thrive, they must work together, have higher-quality animals, be trained in better farming methods and be connected to formal agricultural markets. To help Heifer bring our work to exponentially more families than ever before, we understand that empowering the women in these communities helps elevate social capital, increasing productivity and enhancing local economies. Through this project, thousands of women will be transformed into powerful small farmers and businesswomen, selling meat and milk in organized markets.
Heifer International works with smallholder farms in more than 40 countries to provide and empower self-reliance and ensure economic security to those in need. Since 1944, Heifer International has helped more than 18.5 million families--94.5 million people—to improve their own lives as well as their community through the gift of livestock, training in environmentally sound agricultural practices and education.
