The Project Framework

Effective project design is crucial to the success of our mission. We craft our projects to meet immediate objectives and to increase the potential of achieving our long-term vision.

Project Standards

Achieving holistic and sustainable impact at the global level requires broad collaboration and coordination with other development organizations with similar goals and objectives. It also calls for a better alignment of all our projects across the globe with our mission, vision, global strategic priorities and supporting policies.

Our framework is applied to projects around the world . Each of these projects follows a set of development requirements in order to meet our high quality project standards.

All Heifer projects must:

  • Have a positive impact on small-scale farmers and disadvantaged people, especially women

  • Describe our logic and conceptual framework in detail

  • Demonstrate a clear path to success for no less than 1,000 families per project

  • Adhere to our program principles and Theory of Change

Our Project Cycle

  • STAGE 1: SITUATION ANALYSIS/HOLISTIC APPRAISAL

A situation analysis gives clear understanding of the multiple factors causing the problems and provides familiarity with cultural gender and power dimensions.

  • STAGE 2: PLANNING

This stage starts with developing a framework that provides a clear and precise description of what the project intends to achieve and how.

  • STAGE 3: EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION

Once the conceptual framework is developed and agreed upon by key stakeholders, the plan is put into action. A detailed activity plan with common strategies and approaches required to the desired results is crucial.

  • STAGE 4: MONITORING AND EVALUATION

An effective monitoring and evaluation system keeps the project on track and performing as expected.

  • STAGE 5: REFLECTION, LEARNING AND SHARING

Learning from both our successes and setbacks allows us to carry that knowledge and experience into other projects so that we may improve their quality and effectiveness and achieve greater impact.

Project Timeline

Benchmarks for a project may occur simultaneously or at different times, depending on the objectives and needs of the particular community.

Accountability and Transparency

The project planning, implementation and management systems ensure accountability, maximize program efficiency and track progress against a common set of indicators. This allows us to quantify the impact of country-specific variables and innovations and rapidly share learning within our global community.
