Don’t Be a Rat, Unpack!

Every week we feature a fun and/or educational activity you can try at home or in the classroom. Today is National Pack Rat Day and like pack rats, some of us tend to collect more belongings than we really need. Here at Heifer International we encourage people to practice Sharing and Caring, one of Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development. If you’ve got some things to unpack, here are a few options to lighten your load.

  1. Hold a Clothing Swap
    Donating old clothing is helpful, but a swap can make a more direct impact in your neighborhood or organization. Ask participants to bring a few articles of clothing and then have fun haggling over the trades. A swap can also be done with shoes, toys and books.
  2. Upcycle With Style
    Old T-shirts for quilt squares, abandoned toys as planters and plastic grocery bags to make trash cans-Pinterest is filled with DIY instructions. Inventive minds are a powerful tool in caring for the earth. Before you recycle, try to find ways to upcycle the weary and worn things in your cluttered closets.
  3. Give Your Time
    If you have a “load” of time on your hands, why not use it to help others organize their abundant belongings? Or, use it in other meaningful ways like taking a meal to new parents, offering to walk your elderly neighbor’s dog or care for the Earth by picking up trash.

Through cooperation and friendship, there are many ways to share and care. Be creative and get involved in your community. Small acts of kindness will spread, building a large network of giving to Pass on the Gift® of hope, unity and friendship.

From the Field: Assembled to Celebrate

Heifer International project participants work hard every day to Pass on the Gift® (POG) they once received and transition from recipient to donor. Sharing their success often brings participants joy and a commendable cause to celebrate.

In March and April 2013, Heifer Cambodia self-help groups (SHG) organized seven POG ceremonies. More than 820 families shared gifts of livestock, vegetables, tree seeds and rice with new project families. During one ceremony, POG recipient Chea Sambo responded with gratitude to her donor family, “Words cannot express how happy I am to receive the gifts. I promise to take good care of the animal and improve my garden so that I can pass on to other needy families, and become a donor like your family.Thanks much to your family and to Heifer.”

Armenian YES! Youth Clubs gathered to celebrate the past year’s activities during the 10th Youth Parliament General Assembly, April 26-27, 2013. Thirty clubs shared about their projects, which were mostly focused on civic participation and responsibility, and the success of their small businesses. Vardouhi Torosyan, a 13-year-old jewelry-making business owner, said she was able to pass on her seed money of $100 to another club member so he could also start a business.

Beneath snowy mountain peaks, farmers in Tibet applauded each other during a wintry April POG. Participants from Dan Nu, Xue Ba and Zhi Ba villages passed on a monetary fund worth about $37,342 to Xu Ba village. Three candidates were distinguished among their community for modeling exceptional behavior and a traditional Tibetan Guozhuang (bonfire) dance ended the celebration.

Support Women Worldwide on Mother’s Day

In Spitak, in the Lori region of Armenia, lives Irina Dallaqyan, a 37-year-old widow and mother to three sons. The family has lived in temporary housing since 1988 when an earthquake left them homeless. A local farm provided Irina with work as a dairy maid, but her position only paid an inadequate $140 a month.

Irina’s neighbor told her about Heifer International’s work with Spitak Farmers Association and she made a request to become a recipient in the next Passing on the Gift® ceremony.

“I received two pigs from the project, [but] because my family lives in a temporary shelter, we have no barn,” Irina said.

The Heifer project, Agricultural Development Project in Spitak and Lernantsk Communities, helps farmers house their animals together and share the work and income generated from the joint farming.

“One of my pigs delivered eight piglets, and the other delivered nine,” Irina said. “I sold 10 piglets out of 17 and generated 180,000 Armenian drams (about $430). The money I saved from the sales of the piglets was directed to purchase feed for the animals. The rest, seven piglets, I kept to enlarge my farm.”

Through Heifer’s work, Irina found the support she needed and looks forward to future success.

Agriculture Improves Incomes in Central America

Heifer is working with communities in Honduras and Guatemala to create livestock and agriculture businesses, which help residents overcome poverty and malnutrition. Pierre Ferrari, Heifer’s President and CEO, visited these projects in March 2013 and attended a Passing on the Gift® (POG) ceremony in Guatemala. There, project participants gave him a goat to symbolize their gift to Heifer to pass on to communities around the world.

BHARATPUR, Nepal—A Heifer Passing on the Gift® ceremony is filled with moments of joy and playfulness, more than a touch of chaos and the pure pride of recipients who in an instant become donors to other women in need in their community. Heifer executive staff and Board of Directors members celebrated with hundreds of families in three villages in the Chitwan region of Nepal this week.

President and CEO Pierre Ferrari, in Bharatpur for a 13th generation celebration, took the opportunity to pass on a symbolic goat from San Carlos Alzatate village in Guatemala.

“This goat is a representation of the global community and the solidarity we all have for each other,” Ferrari said, who traveled to Guatemala just before the Nepal trip. “The women in Guatemala want you to know that you are not alone, and they salute your success amid the real challenges that they also face. The key to understand is that together there is nothing we cannot do.”

Heifer Board of Directors Vice Chair Arlene Falk Withers also spoke at the celebration, praising all the women present for their hard work and impressive returns on the investment of animals and training they received from Heifer.

“We want you to know how proud we are of you,” Withers said. “We know that you’ll go on to do tremendous things in the future.”

From the Field: Building Strong Foundations

Holding signs that read, “Women are the key to community development,” Nepali women celebrated International Women’s Day by marching together through their villages. Through accountability and leadership development, numerous women have established a deep commitment to the Cornerstones. More than 20,000 original families have benefited from this dedication in just over one year.

Heifer Philippines held 12 Cornerstones Workshops in that country’s Caraga region preparing participants for involvement in the area’s first dairy project. The project will reach 400 original partner families and another 800 families through POG. After the workshops, participants agreed that the Cornerstones helped them realize the value of working together and how to nuture that gift. 

Hmayak Najaryan, 40, of Khachaghbyur, Armenia, was trying to support his wife and two sons on little more than $100 a month. In partnership with Ashtarak Kat CJSC, Heifer Armenia provided alfalfa seeds, a milk cooling tank and artificially inseminated the family’s cow. Now Hmayak’s sons, who want to become educated professionals, have a stronger foundation on which to grow and dream.

Some Yogurt But Not Nearly Enough

PATA RAT, Romania—In the valley below a landfill, on the edge of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca, sits a small slab structure. Chickens peck at the muddy yard out front and dogs play amid old tires and an even older scooter. In the corner of Marian Tomita’s yard are stacked nine trays filled with 20 yogurts each. Tomita lives just outside the settlement of Pata Rat, the largest Roma community in the Cluj region.

Founded after the 1989 revolution which saw the overthrow and execution of communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, the settlement is home to around 700 Roma, or gypsies. They live in wood shacks on the trash-strewn hills that surround a landfill. For the last five years, Heifer Romania field assistant George Abrudan has brought milk and yogurt to the children every month. The dairy products are donated through Farmers Feed the Children, a Heifer program which provides cows to impoverished farmers who then donate a portion of their milk to orphans and others in need, like this Roma community.

Usually Abrudan shows up in a truck loaded with yogurts and milk, but on this gray February morning he has only 180 yogurts. He hasn’t visited since before Christmas and Tomita greets him with a warm smile. Unemployment is high in the village, says Tomita.

“When they see we are Roma they say they don’t have places for us,” he says.

Pataratblog-3Illiteracy also makes it difficult for many members of the community to find employment, with the majority having completed only four years of grade school, says Tomita. He cares for a church built by a charitable organization out of the Netherlands and provides the children with a warm meal every Thursday.

It is mid-morning, but still early in the community, and news of the yogurts spreads slowly. The children arrive in ones and twos and then threes and fours, the older ones holding the younger ones’ hands. Tomita lines them up against the wall and hands them each a yogurt. They remain where they are, hoping he will hand them another. One little boy of about 10 years old zips several into the chest of his well worn snowsuit; a girl maybe 9 years old wants to know when Abrudan will bring milk. She is thin, like all the others, and suffers from an upset stomach.

Cassandra doesn’t ask for anything, just waits patiently with one little brother balanced on her hip and another at her side. She is 10 years old and does not attend school. At Christmas someone gave the family of 10 several oranges and bananas, but usually they survive on potato or noodle soup.

Pataratblog-2Yogurts cradled gingerly in their small hands, the children head back down the road toward a hill dotted with one-room wood and plastic shacks. Crows and dogs scavenge amongst plastic bottles. Garbage trucks barrel toward the landfill over the hill where the children’s parents search for scrap metal to sell. In Tomita’s yard only the cardboard cartons that carried the yogurts remain.

“One hundred yogurts are not enough,” says Tomita. “You have to come with 500 or 600.”

He is inside his home now, looking out the window where he can see two small boys headed toward his door. The children will keep coming, asking for yogurts that are not there, and won’t be there until next month, when Abrudan returns.

Women Farmers are the Path out of Poverty

Earlier this week, we had the honor of hosting former democratic Presidents and Prime Ministers as they gathered to take part in Club de Madrid’s annual conference. Club de Madrid is a nonprofit organization that works to strengthen democratic institutions and to offer advice on the resolution of political conflicts in order to enhance development and improve the lives of those most in need.

This year’s theme was “Harnessing 21st Century Solutions: A Focus on Women.” We were very excited at Heifer to participate in these discussions, as it is a common theme in our work.

There was a flurry of events, including a dinner hosted by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, where I was asked to speak about the important role women play in ending hunger and poverty. I’d like to share with you some of my thoughts from that evening:

It is important that efforts such as the Club de Madrid conference continue, to ensure full participation by women, in politics, government and business, as these are all vital to the kind of world we wish to live in and to leave to our children and grandchildren.

I am pleased, too, at the role Heifer International is taking to help create this future world state, this must-win effort, through agricultural development. We know there is no development strategy more beneficial to society than one that involves women as central players.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a recent interview with Heifer’s magazine staff, “Women have shown, time and again, that they will seize opportunities to improve their own and their families’ lives.  And even when it seems that no opportunity exists, they still find a way.” We know that to be true. We see it every day in every country in every corner of the world in our work.

Heifer International is a leader in agricultural development with the extremely poor farming population. You may not know that, though, because we’ve long been viewed as a gentle, well-meaning “give a goat” charity. But we are so much more than that. And women—very poor, smallholder farming women – are at the very core of our work. This has been true for nearly 70 years.

Our mission has been and is to work alongside those women and men, providing animals and training, and educating them to use them as assets and build a business. As families grow better, more resilient crops, their nutrition and diets improve, and they earn more income. We support their efforts to connect to viable markets so they can contribute to and benefit from agricultural value chains.

We do this very patiently. Our partnerships with these families last from three to five years to ensure resilience and sustainability. The transformation continues, as each family—more than 18.4 million to date—pledges to pass on the first-born female offspring of their animal, with training, to another family. We call it Passing on the Gift, and it’s community building in its purest form: community decided and community driven. It shifts the communities we work with from being recipients to donors. The deep psychological transformation is remarkable.

We do that because economic growth without social change and growth is doomed to fail. It doesn’t last; it isn’t sustainable. But combine our inputs with training in our 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development on issues such as sharing and caring, gender equity, accountability, full participation, animal welfare and others, and you create generations of change, of improvement, not just for one family or two, but thousands.

In our Nepal program, for example, communities are celebrating their 13th pass-on generation. Imagine, one goat became two, then four, then eight. After 13 generations, that is 4,096 goats, not counting all the kids, and 4,096 additional families benefiting from the original goat and training. That’s exponential impact.

You know the numbers, but they bear repeating—nearly one billion people are chronically hungry, 2 ½ billion people live on less than $2 a day, world population is at 7 billion now with 9 billion expected by 2050. That’s a lot of mouths to feed. The question is, how do we do that?

We believe that we, and others like us, have part of the answer.

The dominant narrative today asks how investments in large-scale agriculture can solve the world’s food problems. But that question ignores potential costs of that kind of scale-up in environmental impact, in economic and social equity. So the more appropriate question might be: how can smallholder agriculture achieve the necessary scale so as to be able to feed the world and cool the planet.

Here is our view. Currently, there are 650 million smallholder farmers in the world; most of them—70 percent—are women. They are the very backbone of agriculture, and the key drivers of food production. They own less than 1 percent of the earth’s land, but they produce up to a staggering 80 percent of the developing world’s food—proof that, as authors Nick Kristof and Sheryl Dunn observe, “Women hold up half the sky.” In this case, more!

For Heifer, these smallholder farmers—women—are the future to feeding the world.

We are seeing progress made – significant progress. We have seen extreme poverty reduced. The proportion of hungry people has been reduced. Today, nearly 80 percent of humanity has enough to eat to maintain a productive and healthy lifestyle. A dozen or more countries have reached the first Millennium Development Goal to halve hunger from 1990 levels.

Public and private investments in research, irrigation and infrastructure are up, and the Green Revolution continues. Yields are up, for example, in Malawi, which transformed itself from a net importer to a net exporter of maize for a number of years running. We’ve seen improvements in Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia and elsewhere.

We are seeing greater use of agroforestry to improve soil fertility and increasing investment in projects that reach women and other vulnerable populations. But there remains much to be done; we cannot afford to lose the momentum.

We want to ensure continued and steady growth toward all of the Millennium Development Goals, toward humanity’s goal—to ensure that everyone everywhere has the same chance to eat, to be healthy, to contribute, to be fulfilled.

And that still begins with women.

For Heifer, it begins in a farmer’s field, but it has to grow, to bloom so to speak, so that women take their place and strengthen their impact in decision-making forums, such as local cooperatives, national agri-business forums, government cabinets; local, provincial and state assemblies; political parties; the judiciary; labor organizations; NGOs and others.

We have so much to gain from increasing women’s leadership. History shows that economic and social development always contributes to positive attitudinal changes in perceptions regarding the appropriate role of women, proving that given the right tools and training, along with the opportunity to build assets and income and a means to broaden the views of men to accept women’s rights, these women will help lead and help feed the world. And we need them to.

We are a proven solution to hunger and poverty, but we are one of many who share in this most important mission. We need to ensure that we come together to invest in rural agriculture, particularly in women who are the key to feeding this hungry world.

I encourage you to invest in these women, to invest in smallholder agriculture. They will provide us with the best path out of poverty and the world will be fed.

 

This Philanthropy Day, Become a Philanthropist

On National Philanthropy Day®, charities around the world thank you for your support. Your involvement—whether it’s mentoring, volunteering, giving, staffing an event or showing your support on social media—makes philanthropy possible, and makes National Philanthropy Day so special and meaningful.

One of the unique things about Heifer International’s model is that the generous gifts of our supporters – you, the philanthropists – empower our project families to themselves become philanthropists. Yes, it is a project requirement for our original beneficiaries to Pass on the Gift of livestock and training. But the voluntary continuation of Passing on the Gift is seen in nearly every one of our project communities. Infected by the spirit of philanthropy and enabled by their improved economic status, families who once required charity become charitable givers. It’s one of the most remarkable signs of transformation we see in the field.

Hongyu Pastured Chicken Store

In June this year, the Hongyu Cooperative, part of Heifer China’s Earthquake Rehabilitation Project, opened a store to sell pastured chickens. With help from Heifer, the cooperative was so successful at improving the production of pastured chickens that there were quickly about 40,000 chickens on the market, driving prices and profits down. To solve this problem, the cooperative began to make careful production plans and implement market development initiatives with more help from Heifer.

This year, 12 cooperative members decided to invest in opening a store to sell their own chickens, connecting the product directly with the customer and eliminating the middlemen. At the store, the price per pound for pastured chickens is about $2.02, instead of the $1.73 per kilogram previously paid by middlemen (a 17 percent increase). The monthly revenue of the store is about $636. Lin Fengchen, director general of the cooperative said, “The sales of our store are quite good, so we are planning to open another one within this year.” The excellent performance of the store is due to the high quality of its products and the value-adding services provided by the store. These results prove that smallholder farmers can benefit from efforts in business development and other activities that upgrade the product along the value chain.

This story is just one of many where training and agricultural inputs from Heifer – a result of philanthropy here – transforms small farmers into successful businesspeople.

Heifer CEO Speaks at World Food Prize 2012

This week I am honored to be a part of the World Food Prize 2012 Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, to represent the work of Heifer International and to help give voice to the millions of smallholder farmers who struggle daily against enormous odds to feed themselves and their families.

The World Food Prize is an incredible event, founded by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug in 1986, that honors outstanding individuals from all over the world who have made substantial contributions in the fight against hunger.

It was only two years ago that Heifer’s then-president, Jo Luck, and Bread for the World President David Beckmann accepted the World Food Prize. It was a milestone—the first time the prize recognized the critical achievements that non-governmental organizations, such as Heifer International and Bread for the World, are making empowering everyday people everywhere to help end hunger.

I am humbled to be standing in their shadow and honored to be carrying on Jo Luck’s legacy. Since that October day in 2010, Heifer has helped another four million families move beyond subsistence to resilience, bringing our total to more than 18 million families assisted.

We cannot end hunger and poverty on our own. The direction that Heifer is embarking on will move us closer to achieving our mission of ending hunger and poverty and caring for the Earth. We are building on our past success to help more families than ever before by increasing our scale of impact. And our persistent efforts have not gone unnoticed. We have caught the attention of many large and impactful organizations such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Bank and United States Agency for International Development. I met with these organizations when I traveled to India, Nepal and Cambodia. They have seen the socioeconomic advancements in our project communities, generated by our work, and  they are interested in integrating with our efforts to empower families.

Speaking at the World Food Prize, surrounded by the luminaries of the development world, means that Heifer is being recognized as a key player. These next few years will be exciting and full of promise. But don’t just be an observer, get involved. Everyone has a role to play in ending hunger and poverty and your involvement in your own community can help the families all over the world with whom we work.
