Around the Web: Christmas Budgets, Awesome Fundraisers, Spirit of Giving

Every Sunday we highlight some of the people who are funding our work creatively or helping us spread the word of our mission online. If you spot Heifer International while you’re surfing the web or know of a fun or creative fundraising effort, please share it with us here in the comments.

Jack Topchik shares some one-liners in this article, Savor Life, including one he got from an ad campaign, that can seem especially timely this time of year, including ”If your cup runneth over, spill some.”

Family finances may be forcing smaller Christmas budgets, but moms are hoping the changes they are planning this year will be a chance for something more meaningful for their families.

Author and long-time Heifer supporter Patrick Rothfuss and his non-profit Worldbuilders has raised more than $1 million for Heifer International! This year’s Worldbuilders fundraiser runs through January 18, and all proceeds go to Heifer.

Andean trekking specialist Llama Expeditions is donating a llama through Heifer International and inviting kindhearted adventure travelers to join them this holiday season.

This lead definitely caught my eye: “Culinary arts students at Rocky Hill High School are doing their part to end world hunger.” These kids created and baked gingerbread houses to auction them off to benefit Heifer.

Here’s an interesting fundraiser: People bid on the opportunity to play Dungeons & Dragons with eight accomplished authors next January, including Patrick Rothfuss, who is mentioned above. All the proceeds go to Worldbuilders, the fundraising organization that gives its money to Heifer International.

Read about this mom’s quest to share the spirit of giving with her kids, despite a little bit of resistance. Luckily, her boys are fond of Heifer and the concrete idea of using their money to buy a flock of chicks to provide for a family.

Bates Creative Group, who partnered with Heifer to create our World Ark tablet magazine app, wrote a blog post all about it: Stop the Insanity With Innovation.

Gift Guides/Gift Ideas/Charities Lists
Thank you to all who mentioned Heifer in gift guides and in their charity lists. Here are some we came across this past week:

Ryan Bell Gives Gift of Transformation

Ryan Bell

Ryan surpassed his $25,000 goal on December 14. He's currently at $27,705. Let's help him get to $30,000.

I have to admit, I was skeptical. When I wrote and blogged about the second of the two stories on Ryan Bell, I fully expected it to take much longer before he reached his goal of raising enough money for a $25,000 Gift of Transformation.

But this remarkable young man proved me wrong. Again. Ryan reached his goal lofty goal late last week, and his Team Heifer page continues to bring in money. I’m truly grateful to have been able to tell his story; to have gotten to know Ryan and his family.

But the best part of all of this? Ryan isn’t done. He’s not satisfied with reaching his goal years before he expected to. When I contacted Ryan’s mom, Laura, last week, she was going to text him at school to tell him the news. He was thrilled, she said. Their conversation went a little like this:

Laura: “It made his day!  So, that afternoon we looked up the new total and I said, ‘You know, at this rate you might be able to add a camel to your goal.’  You know my son by now… He said, ‘Mom, I think we should add an Ark!’”

Right now he’s more than half-way to reaching his NEW goal of adding $5,000 more to his remarkable total. If you want to help Ryan, you can go to his Team Heifer page and donate.

Provide Education for Girls on Universal Children’s Day

Uneducated women live a limited life. They have few personal choices about marriage, the number of children they will have and how their family will spend its money. Education for girls is a key element in fighting hunger and poverty.

Limited Lives

Education For Girls

Due to their marginalized status in many areas of the world, women’s movements are often restricted to the home, and they are not welcome to participate in making personal or community decisions. Their husbands dictate their lives. Their lack of education coupled with their low status severely limits income-generating opportunities. Moreover, their social subordination places them at a high risk for domestic violence, and if they become widows or their marriage ends, trafficking.

People in many places still believe spending money on sending a girl to school is pointless. And if she is lucky enough to get to go, when income is limited, the family often will stop her schooling in favor of spending the money on her brothers’ school fees. When half of the population isn’t fulfilling its potential, the entire community suffers.

Education for Girls Changes Women’s Lives

Basic education for girls changes their lives. The Strey Tbong Pich women’s group in Cambodia has learned to read and write thanks to training through a Heifer International project. They can now learn about sanitation and nutrition, keep financial records and have access to more income-generating opportunities.

“Before joining the group and attending the literacy class, our family had never drunk boiled water,” said 37-year-old Kan Nai Ky from the Strey Tbong Pich women’s group. “Our house was not hygienic, as we had never cared about waste around our house, and there was no sanitation inside the house. Since studying the literacy book on improving the environment, we know the importance of good hygiene, sanitation and the environment. Now we always boil the water before drinking.”

Imagine if these women had learned to read when they were girls. What different lives might they have led?

One of our newest items in the Heifer International Gift Catalog is Send a Girl to School. The gift provides a family in need with training and livestock so they can earn the income they need to pay for their daughter’s school fees and supplies. Education for girls is one of the surest ways to break the cycle of poverty and dependence in a community.

Universal Children’s Day is Today

Celebrate this Universal Children’s Day by changing the future for a girl. This holiday, created in 1954 by the United Nations, works to benefit the interests of children by limiting long-work hours and increasing access to education.

This Universal Children’s Day, help provide education for girls by giving now. Your holiday gift for a loved one can truly transform the lives of others.

Commit Acts of Kindness Today

Today is World Kindness Day, which is relatively un-celebrated here in the United States. What a shame, too. We could all use a little extra kindness, don’t you think? I still remember, back in high school, being made to do a Random Acts of Kindness project. At the time I thought it was ridiculous, having to log my daily acts of kindness every day for a month. As an adult with a wider view of the world, I now see the value.

There’s an interesting post on Huffington Post UK today about the personal benefits of compassion and committing acts of kindness.

What greater acts of kindness could you make today than to donate to a struggling farm family through Heifer International?

The gift of a Family Farm Care Package will help a family boost the productivity of their farm, helping them grow more food for their family to eat and sell.

The family of Anna Gharzaryan and her husband, Aram Karapetyan of Armenia received a pregnant heifer from Heifer Armenia and the Armenian Missionary Association of America’s joint program. Their children, Hasmik, Hayastan and Hovhannes named the cow Nargiz. Before joining the project, the family was struggling. They didn’t have livestock, and they didn’t have the money to buy one, despite both parents working hard. Because milk and dairy products are an important part of their children’s diets, the couple was forced to purchase dairy products from the neighbors.

It’s been a year and a half since Nargiz the cow came to the Karapetyan family. Her first calf, Samara, has already become a nice heifer and will be passed on to another family in the community next year. This year a bull calf, named Bzho, was born. He is as nice and clever as his mom and sister. Nargiz’s productivity has further increased with the birth of Bzho. Last year, she gave more than a gallon of very tasty milk each day. Now, she is producing around two gallons per day. The family no longer has to spend their small income on dairy for the children, and with time and additional training, the family’s productivity and income will increase further.

Gifts of training and livestock supported by the Family Farm Care Package will help more families like the Karapetyans become self-reliant. Commit acts of kindness for farmers by donating. It makes a great gift for this holiday season, because it shows your friend, family member or colleague you know the value of spreading kindness around the globe.

Tell us about your acts of kindness this World Kindness Day in the comments below.

Don’t Know What to Give this Holiday Season?

Are you at a loss for what to give family, friends and colleagues this year? Tired of giving the same old thing?

What to give? Not this.

Here’s my philosophy on how to know what to give for any occasion: If you know exactly what to buy – that perfect gift the recipient will definitely love and use – go for it. If you’re headed to the stores to hunt around for something your friend will, at best, marginally appreciate, give to charity instead.

Sure, you can Google “Gifts under $30″ and order your boyfriend a bearded ski mask or your sister a couch pillow that plays music from an iPod.

Or you could head over to Heifer International’s Gift Catalog online and pick out the perfect gift. A flock of geese, a goat or some honeybees show you care for your loved ones and want to honor them this holiday season with a gift that really gives back.

What to give? This!

What to give? This! When you give through Heifer, your recipients will receive this year's beautiful Honor Card. Image courtesy of Heifer International.

For each gift of $10 or more, you can request an Honor Card for your recipients.

This year on the Heifer Blog, we’ll be highlighting many of our Gift Catalog items so you can get a deeper view of what these gifts will mean to the ultimate recipients: the impoverished families around the world, whose lives Heifer sets out to change. I hope you’ll follow our What to Give series and that you’ll find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift

Just a reminder: Mother’s Day is coming up soon.

We think Mother’s Day is a great time to show how much your mother’s care and teaching meant to you. After all, if you’re a Heifer supporter, you’re already a well-informed and compassionate person, and you probably learned much of that from your mother.

Just look at how much is spent on gifts at Mother’s Day, versus the actual desires of real moms:

Helping women and mothers is important to Heifer International. In fact, it’s one of our Cornerstones. We know that mothers are on the front lines of the struggle to keep families adequately fed.

So maybe a sweet gesture for Mother’s Day this year would be a Heifer animal gift, a gift that will multiply for generations to come.

How to Have a Green Easter

Easter is just a few days away, and now is the perfect time to begin planning on how you can make the day a little bit ‘greener.’
  • Reuse baskets you already have around the house for Easter Day and gifts.
  • Buy local eggs to dye and eat.
  • Use a natural egg dye, they’re safer.
  • If you’re planning a Easter dinner, buy local food from a farmers market for your meal.
  • Instead of chocolate bunnies, buy fair trade chocolate instead.
  • Consider using paper grass instead of plastic grass for Easter baskets. Once Easter is over, compost the paper grass.
  • Don’t spend money on cut, store-bought flowers. Instead, buy flowers that you can plant and will grow in a container or a yard.
  • Instead of real gifts, give a Heifer gift.

So how will you be making your Easter greener?
