Weekly Article Roundup: Let’s Celebrate Earth Day

This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day! Here at Heifer HQ, the Arkansas Earth Day Foundation is hosting the 2012 Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 21, on our campus in downtown Little Rock from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Festivities will include a kids’ activities area with a rock-climbing wall, tie-dying, and crafts from recycled materials. Heifer will also have animals from the Heifer Ranch to show how food and income can be cultivated sustainably.

If you’re not in the area this weekend, check out some of our blog posts from this week that will help you celebrate Earth Day:

On other Heifer News:

Even though Earth Day is this weekend, Heifer and its projects work everyday to care for the Earth in a sustainable way. Read more here about how Heifer’s model of holistic development doesn’t stop with ending hunger.

Celebrate Earth Day At Heifer

Here at Heifer International, we strive to make every day Earth Day. We’ve told you a couple of times this week about  what you can do to help celebrate this year’s Earth Day on Sunday.

If you haven’t yet figured out what to do, or if you’re looking for a fun way to get your whole family invovled in saving the Earth, we’ve gone one more suggestion for you: Come see us on the Heifer Campus and maybe even help us set a world record!

Earth Day 2012 from Rockaway Township Public Library

The Arkansas Earth Day Foundation is hosting the 2012 Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 21, on our campus in downtown Little Rock from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can learn fun ways to contribute to our environment’s continued health, and can enjoy music and activities celebrating the Earth we inhabit. The Festival includes booths and hands-on demonstrations showing visitors how to be earth-conscious by recycling and reusing whenever possible.

It wouldn’t be a Heifer event without some of our animals from the Heifer Ranch, either. The animals will be on hand to illustrate ways that food and income can be cultivated sustainably. Heifer Village will also be open, so visitors can see how they help end hunger and poverty in an Earth-friendly way.

Various nonprofits will collect household goods and e-waste including old cell phones and chargers, while Freecycle will collect unwanted items and let visitors bring them home.

And we need moms and dads for the Great Cloth Diaper Challenge. Arkansas parents join with others around the globe at 11 a.m. to try to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest simultaneous worldwide diaper change.

So if you’re in our area, come on down. We’re encouraging folks to leave the vehicle at home and use alternative transportation, like the bus, walking, biking or carpooling. Patrons are also encouraged to bring their own reusable shopping bags and refillable water bottles.

Let’s Make Every Day Earth Day

Earth Day will be celebrated this Sunday, and I’ve been doing some reflecting. Taking advantage of the cooler weather, I walked to work this morning and thought about what Earth Day means for me and how Heifer’s mission isn’t just about ending hunger and poverty, but it also includes caring for the Earth.

There is no denying that the Earth is in trouble. Most of us are aware of the effects from climate change.  Catastrophic floods in Pakistan, torrential rains in Eastern Uganda, stifling drought in the Horn of Africa, enormous forest fires in Russia, powerful hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, etc. The rhythm of the seasons are disturbed, the web of life is askew; nothing seems quite right anymore. Global warming is frightening; and sadly, humans are contributing to it and destroying the only home we know.

That’s the bad news. But here’s what we can do.

We need to change from the inside – change our thinking and attitude and, most important, our behavior. There’s a connection and an interdependence with the elements that surround us: water, soil, fire and air. When you have this connection with Earth, you are invested.

Honestly, I think every day should be Earth Day. We should always make an effort. Caring for the Earth isn’t something “someone else” will solve. I’m optimistic that together we can save the Earth and live in a world where anyone, anywhere could…

… walk up to a river and drink the water … and feel safe.

… buy and eat fruits and vegetables … and feel safe.

… eat fish or meat … and feel safe.

… take a deep breath of air … and feel safe.

I believe one day we will live in a world where everyone has enough to eat, cherishes their surroundings and lovingly cares for this planet we call home.

How To Celebrate Earth Day

So, how can you celebrate Earth Day this Sunday, April 22? By getting everyone involved to participate in this year’s theme of Mobilize the Earth and focus on what you are going to do to make a difference to make our world a better place.

The Earth Day Netword has listed these ideas on how you can get involved:

Happy Earth Week

Here at Heifer, where our mission is to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth, every week is, to some degree, Earth Week; every day an Earth Day. Last year we hosted a series examining how Heifer projects promote a healthier environment around the world (read part 1, part 2 and part 3).

This year’s theme from the Earth Day Network is Mobilize the Earth, and instead of focusing on what Heifer does to build a more sustainable future, we’d like to focus on what you are going to do.

So tell us here in the comments what you plan to do to celebrate Earth Day this Sunday and what everyday changes you’ll make to protect our planet. If you need some inspiration, Huffington Post has a seven-day Earth Week challenge for you.

And be sure to visit the Earth Day Network’s Billion Acts of Green site to log your pledge.
