World Health Day Teaches Kids to Relieve the Pressure

Every week we feature a fun and/or educational activity you can try at home or in the classroom. World Health Day is held on April 7 to celebrate the founding of World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. The 2013 theme is “Control Your Blood Pressure,” which is not usually associated with children; however, among infants and children hypertension can be linked to kidney problems or excess weight.

Celebrate World Health Day 2013

WHO’s goal for World Health Day is to raise awareness about high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Healthy habits improve detection and lower risk of hypertension.

  • Know the health consequences of high blood pressure
  • Encourage others to check their blood pressure
  • Establish healthy behaviors
  • Reduce salty foods
  • Stay active

WHO also encourages individuals to share their experiences through social media, host a local discussion group or organize an event, such as an art exhibit or concert, to spread the news.

Kidshealth.org provides health information for parents, teens and kids. The site’s games and activities teach children about growing up, staying fit and eating healthy. ‘How the Body Works’ scavenger hunt is head to toe fun as kids learn how their body functions. Parents and kids can also watch movies, read articles, take quizzes and other activities to learn about heart health.

Heifer International project participants learn how to live healthier lives by eating more nutritious foods and improving living conditions. When participants receive an animal, or other gifts like seeds or trees, they also receive training on how to successfully care for that gift. As they begin to sell milk, eggs, cheese, honey, meat and wool, they reap the benefit of increased income and improved diets. Some also share with their neighbors when they have extra.

Around the Web: Finding Nemo’s Starfish, Hike for Heifer

Every Sunday we highlight some of the people who are funding our work creatively or helping us spread the word of our mission online. If you spot Heifer International while you’re surfing the web or know of a fun or creative fundraising effort, please share it with us here in the comments.

Allison Janney, one of the many celebrities on this year’s dinner committee for Heifer International’s Beyond Hunger event, which was held on Friday at the Montage Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, talked with journalist Meredith Moss of Ohio’s Journal News about her role (the startfish, Peach, who Nemo meets in the dentist’s fish tank) in Finding Nemo 3D, which recently premiered.

John Palmer named Heifer International 2012 Charity of the Year

John Palmer Art has named Heifer International their “Charity of the Year.” The John Palmer Art Gallery is hosting its 5th Annual Gala Event “An Evening of Escapism” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Heifer International. And the gallery plans to host a “Heifer Party” on Sunday, December 2, where an original Heifer-inspired painting will be auctioned. Palmer likes Heifer’s mission, he said, because we teach families to be self-reliant just as his own mission is to teach artists to be self-reliant.

If you’re near Curwensville, Pennsylvania, on October 6 or November 10, you might want to check out Curwensville Presbyterian Church’s first-ever “Alternative Gift Fair” highlighting meaningful gifts representing eight different organizations, including Heifer International.

Read about some WILD women who read, meet and donate to Heifer International monthly through their book club, on the very entertaining blog, Judy’s Stew, written by Judy Alter, a fan of Heifer who also happens to be the author of the book the club was discussing that day, Skeleton in a Dead Space.

Today at 2 p.m. in Waverly, Pennsylvania, you can join other hikers who will be walking six miles for Heifer International. There is no fee to walk, but donations will go toward a heifer or two.

Make a Bowl and a Statement on Earth Day

Once a week we will be featuring a fun and/or educational activity you can try at home or in the classroom.

Bowl made from magazine pages

This year to help celebrate Earth Day we have compiled a number of activities you can try on a Pinterest board. One I’ve always wanted to try is making recycled magazine bowls. I’ve seen them at craft shops for the last few years and have always been intrigued by them.

All you need to do this activity is:

  • 1″ x 12″ cardboard stick
  • Scotch tape
  • Magazine

Tear out the magazine pages, the more colorful, the better. Put the stick on the corner of the page and wrap the paper around it tightly, carefully folding and creasing. When done wrapping, pull the stick out add tape the corner down to prevent unwrapping. Coil the completed strip tightly, and tape the end. Each new strip is attached with tape where the last one ended. The result will be a flat roll. Keep adding strips until it is the desired size and shape it into a bowl. Apply a generous coat of Mod Podge on one side and let dry. After it is dry, coat the outside.

For a more detailed description of this activity, go to the original blog post on Art Projects for Kids. For ideas and inspiration of different bowl designs, check out these pins we found on Pinterest.

Other cool Earth Day activities can be found on the Earth Day board on Heifer’s Pinterest or in the Classroom Resources section of Heifer’s website.

As always, once you do this activity, we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments and/or see photos that we can share to inspire others.

Heifer Around the Web: Spring Break Magic at Heifer Ranch

Every Sunday we will highlight some of the people who are funding our work creatively or helping us spread the word of our mission online. If you spot Heifer International while you’re surfing the web or know of a fun or creative fundraising effort, please share it with us here in the comments!

Our supporters can get quite creative and fun in their efforts to raise money for our projects around the world. Here are a few I spotted this week:

Preparations are being made for the 4th Annual Students of Heidi Mayo Art Exhibit, along with a silent auction to benefit one of our projects!

Mathew Chambers writes about his recent spring break trip (which included an overnight in the Global Village) to Heifer Ranch and “the magic that occurs,” on Georgia Southern University’s Center for Entrepreneurial Learning and Leadership website.

Spreading our message is just as important, so I’d like to bring attention to the following blogs that have featured Heifer International:

Giulia Geranium
Guila took the time to share information about our Hatch Hope campaign going on now.

She Knows Real Moms Guide
This blogger shares bits from her interview with Mary Steenburgen, a longtime Heifer supporter.

And finally, we’d like to congratulate Noland Hoshino, who recently won an Alumni Community Service Award for his efforts with the web and social media for the Portland chapter of Heifer International.
