Ending Hunger in Bolivia: There’s More Than Meets the Eye

Mike Thompson, author “The Anywhere Leader,” is visiting Heifer projects in Bolivia as part of his search for stories of leaders who “exemplify what it means to be Driven for Progress, Sensationally Curious and Vastly Resourceful when faced with uncertainty and disruption.”

In a recent post on his blog, Mike shared some interesting insights on how he sees our Bolivia team as a group with many diverse talents…

Heifer International is helping communities here transform socially and economically through training and assistance. For them, one solution won’t work. This team of Heifer leaders must have a broad understanding of the Bolivian landscape and the hundreds of cultures that exist here…To sustain their relevance in this culture and maximize their impact, they must be generalists – something many organizations are asking of their leaders as business grows globally and changes rapidly.

For Heifer to help Bolivian communities transform (mainly through agricultural development), this organization and its leaders have to know what works well at 18,000 feet and at 180 feet. In the highlands, Heifer helps communities grow potatoes and grains. Llamas do pretty well up there, as well. In the lowlands, the focus is on cows and corn. The valleys are perfect for growing fruits and vegetables.

Combine that with different processes for each produce and mix in any number of ethnic groups, languages, customs and lifestyles, and this is a job for Anywhere Leaders who are skilled generalists – right here in Bolivia.

Leadership Lessons from "The Rabbit King"

Mike Thompson, author of the upcoming book The Anywhere Leader, recently concluded a visit to Heifer projects in Nepal and China where he looked for examples of inspirational leaders among our project participants. While in China, Mike met one of Heifer’s greatest success stories — a man who’s come to be known as “The Rabbit King.” Mike does a great job of telling his story on the Anywhere Leader blog:

Just outside of Chengdu, China, lives the Rabbit King – and yes, he goes by that name. It was given to him by his community, which deeply admires him. The Rabbit King was extremely poor before Heifer International provided him with a few rabbits to raise. Those few rabbits turned into 12,000 rabbits in a little more than five years.

The Rabbit King enjoyed years of nurturing and growing his broad, but sadly, about three weeks ago, he lost all but 30 of his rabbits to a massive flood. I asked the him about the consequences of losing almost 12,000 rabbits and being forced to start over. “It’s back to poverty,” he said. I expected tears to follow that comment and his next statement to be something like, “What are my family and I going to do?”

Not the Rabbit King; he didn’t speak of desperation and despair, but rather of confidence and opportunity.

He was thankful for the 30 rabbits that were spared, and he was even more thankful that no one in his family or his community was killed in the disaster. He was surprisingly positive, even as he took me around his farm and showed me the devastation. Even though a plan wasn’t in place yet, his mind was focused on rebuilding.

You can read the rest of his story here. While you’re at it, please also take a look at some of our previous posts about Mike’s travels to Heifer projects.

Anywhere Leaders of Heifer and the World

by Puja Singh
Mike Thompson, the writer of the book “The Anywhere Leader,” just finished the Nepal end of his Heifer trip. His quest for anywhere leaders who achieve their goals despite challenging circumstances took him to rural Nepal. In Itahari, Belsi, Shaktikhor and Palpa, he met Heifer participants who – given their limited education, cultural barriers and economic situations – showed individual and collective leadership that changed their lives for the better. His book focuses on developing leaders who can succeed in any environment. In Nepal – a world away from where he wrote his book – he found examples.
Traits of The Anywhere Leader: driven for progress, sensationally curious and vastly resourceful applies to leaders in rural Nepal and the leaders who lead the most successful companies in the US and the world. Leadership – says Mike, the CEO of SVI who also authored another book on leadership, The Organizational Champion — is primarily about the mindset.
In his blog Mike explains how Heifer participants are an embodiment of anywhere leaders as stated in his book. Drawing references to his leadership model, Mike makes an excellent argument.
Stay tuned as this soul searcher, author and the leader of his company heads to China to meet more anywhere leaders.

Heifer Saves Woman’s Life and Helps Put Her on Leadership Path

Author Mike Thompson has made it to Nepal. He’s already met our hospitable staff, Puja and Suman, and yesterday he posted on his blog about Sabrita Guraguin, a participant of Heifer’s Nepal program whose life went from utter despair to genuine prosperity after receiving a water buffalo and extensive training from Heifer. Read her story on Thompson’s blog to learn more about how Sabrita exemplifies three of Thompson’s Anywhere Leader principles.

Interview with Author Mike Thompson

Before leaving for Nepal yesterday, Mike Thompson, author of the upcoming book The Anywhere Leader, answered a handful of questions for us to provide greater context for his trip to visit some of Heifer’s projects. We hope he has a great journey, and we look forward to seeing what’s to come.

Brooke Edwards: How did you learn about Heifer International?

Mike Thompson: I’ve known and admired Heifer for several years and have always been drawn to its mission.

What drew you to connect Heifer’s work with your own?

Today’s leaders are forced to battle uncertainty and disruption. I define an uncertain situation as having minimal resources, high volatility and complexity. Heifer supports communities that are deprived of sufficient resources and that face significant volatility. With Heifer’s involvement, many of these communities experience economic transformation, and some amazing leaders are behind it. I want to capture the stories of those leaders and highlight the results so we can help others apply similar productive behaviors.

How did you decide to visit Heifer project participants?

I don’t just want to hear the stories, I want to experience them.

Why Nepal and China in particular?

I plan to visit France and the Ukraine as well. I’ll also try to visit Africa and South America too. Asia was a good place to start.

What are you hoping to find on your trip?

Progress and transformation and the leaders and ideas behind them. I want to see glimpses of what once was and of what will be. I want to experience the pride, the joy, the work, the challenges, the people, etc. I want to learn what leads to such transformation, and I want to discover how to help leaders apply some of the behaviors.

In preparing for your trip, what are you most uncertain about?

Everything. I don’t even know if I’ll get into the country. I don’t really know how to pack, if I’ll understand anyone or if I can really get close to the stories and capture them well.

Can you tell me more about the training you’ll be providing to Heifer participants?

I’ll talk about facing uncertainty and how to succeed through the unknowns. I’ll present the traits and behaviors that will help leaders succeed no matter what situation they may face.

Don’t forget to follow along on Mike Thompson’s blog to learn more about his visits with Heifer project participants.
