Heifer Among 40 Organizations Shaking Up the Food System

Heifer International is honored to be among the 40 organizations highlighted by Food Tank: The Food Think Tank for our “invaluable work to change the way we eat, grow, cook, buy, and sell food.”

Since its launch in January, Food Tank has been spreading the messages of groups around the world that are working to improve food systems. They’ve taken the information gathered and researched and chosen to highlight these 40 organizations, with the hope “that the more people know about the work that these groups are doing, the more people can be inspired to make their own change in the food system.”

The list includes organizations from the United States and abroad. Heifer is in esteemed company with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, ONE Campaign, Oxfam, U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme, and WinRock International, among others.

Heifer was chosen, according to the website, for offering, “a variety of resources that help impoverished farmers create sustainable sources of income, providing them with research on effective grazing methods, optimal animal well-being, and the creation of local networks that farmers can use to share resources with one another.”

At Heifer we are working hard to improve the lives of people around the world. We know that changes in the food system, including everything from backyard gardens to agriculture intended for markets, is important to this transformation.

Our Seeds of Change project, which works right here in the U.S., helps to develop sustainable local farmers and food systems through wealth-creation value chains that lead to measurable impact in social capital, livelihoods, nutrition and improved environment.

A good example can be seen in our work in Appalachia with Liz Riddick, a woman who makes kale chips. She wants to expand, but there isn’t enough kale grown locally to accommodate her plans and she cannot afford to import more kale. So, with Heifer’s help through Seeds of Change, Riddick is working with farmers to plant more kale. This will help her produce more kale chips to grow her business, satisfy a growing consumer demand, and provide a new opportunity for income for farmers. Wealth and opportunity grow throughout the value chain.

Agriculture Improves Incomes in Central America

Heifer is working with communities in Honduras and Guatemala to create livestock and agriculture businesses, which help residents overcome poverty and malnutrition. Pierre Ferrari, Heifer’s President and CEO, visited these projects in March 2013 and attended a Passing on the Gift® (POG) ceremony in Guatemala. There, project participants gave him a goat to symbolize their gift to Heifer to pass on to communities around the world.

Hope and Heart in the Ukraine

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to visit Heifer International’s country office in Ukraine. It was an intense trip but I left feeling inspired and intrigued by the work our team at Community Wellbeing/Heifer Ukraine are building in their country.

The change they are creating in Ukraine isn’t just poverty alleviation; it is long-term, sustainable change. It is a true example of our efforts to scale up our impact and increase our ability to touch families in exponential ways. Before the visit it was difficult to understand the context of Heifer’s work with smallholder farmers in Ukraine. As a U.S. citizen who lived through the last phase and ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union, I did not appreciate the profound ways that the 70 years of Soviet rule destroyed trust, initiative and even basic farming skills for which the region was once renowned.

Global partners and local governments believe in our model of work within Ukraine. They believe in the values-based development framework that shapes all of our work. It is what makes true change possible; the social fabric of the communities evolves. As a result, the pride and commitment of the farmers is infectious. These are spirits that believe in change. They know it is possible.

We witnessed farmer cooperatives growing strawberries as red as Crayons. They are working collectively to cultivate 10 hectares of land, but have another 40 hectares identified to grow in the first phase of the Danone/Heifer-Ukraine Ecofruit project. These strawberries connect many families and co-op members, who take great pride in ensuring the crops are properly cultivated and cared for. For them, the strawberries represent jobs, nutritious food, education, futures and access to services they wouldn’t have otherwise.

We also visited a milk processing plant in the Bukovyna region, where the members have already developed a marketing plan led by two women, named Halyna Kushnir and Iryna Pavliuk, and the plant manager, Viktor Ivashko. They have dreams and aspirations of making it the largest milk plant in the region. Twelve tons of milk per day – this is the plant’s capacity. It is a new model of dairy cooperation, which aims to ensure sustainable price and continuity. The raw milk producers, many of them women, are the owners of the enterprise. The milk and future dairy products will be supplied to over 50 schools, and more than 9,000 children will receive higher quality dairy in preschools, orphanages and local communities. This provides additional jobs for the community, medicine and access for children and change for a community that was once without hope. And the commitment and belief they have to this dream is filled with passion and heart. Many of the families involved started with one or two animals. The hope is to someday grow that number to 5-10.

We also visited the official opening of the Cooperative Learning and Service Farm project that will unite 1,100 members, the largest co-op union in the Ukraine. Together with local governments, Danone, SOCODEVI, CIDA, Community Wellbeing/Heifer Ukraine lives are being transformed in ways never thought possible. The learning center will enable local small shareholder farmers’ access to modern milk production and animal breeding methods. Local families will have increased income, improved services, social changes in local governance and increased nutrition. Collectively the project will revive the small shareholder farm development in this region.

Finally, we also visited an herbal tea cooperative in the Carpathian region. The marketer in me left feeling inspired. The small shareholder farmers in this region have united to develop a marketing plan for their products – the Carpathian brand. It is certified by private standards as “natural,” and they have developed a brand strategy and plan for distribution. This group of small shareholder farmers who make apple juice, honey, cheese, milk products, tea, etc. are so proud of the products they have created, they want to collectively brand them and sell them around the world. They have built community trust, improved nutrition, improved income and assets for local families, and now they are interested in building it for the longer term. And it started with placements of animals and training. It gave them hope and a dream.

All of these projects are enabling innovation and change. These methods are then shared amongst communities, and small shareholder farmers are uniting to make change. Heifer International is providing livestock and training as part of these efforts, and it is working.

These projects also represent the spirit and resiliency of this country. The priorities are changing. Communities are uniting. They are not only feeding their families, but also supplying local schools, orphanages and preschools. This changes the landscape of a country. The fabric of Ukraine is rich with soil and agricultural potential. Heifer International, along with many other global and local partners, is creating change in these communities; enabling the Passing on the Gift of potatoes, or seedlings, or knowledge, or skills, or livestock. It is an exciting time.

I have had the good fortune of spending time now with our teams in Peru and Ukraine. I feel blessed to witness the amazing work and transformational change that is occurring around the globe to end hunger and poverty.

South Africa Students Learn the Secret of Heifer International’s Success

Working closely together and sharing a spirit of unity is one of the reasons Heifer International farmers succeed. Three agriculture students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal learned this firsthand when they spent several weeks living and working with members of the Zusiphe Project in South Africa over the summer. The three women and one man left comfortable lives in the city to learn how residents of Nqundu village are fighting poverty and food insecurity on a daily basis.

During their stay, the students participated in training activities and spent time collecting data, analyzing soil and planting vegetables. They saw the obstacles residents deal with every day and learned how, as a group, community members overcome them.

“I have learned that group members are taking care of each other and are united,” said 19-year-old student Inamandia Mngadi. “When the group received seedlings, some members did not have gardens yet, but they could plant their seedlings in the garden of one of the group members who are close to them. They are very supportive of each other.”

Living in Nqundu village helped the students understand that Heifer’s model is not to give a handout, but a “hand up.” Gifts such as seeds and livestock are a significant part of the project, but only through sharing the same values and being committed to working together and helping each other does the project succeed. The Zusiphe community is a great example of that.

The Zusiphe Project in northern KwaZulu-Naltal began in early 2012 and will lift approximately 1,000 people out of poverty. Participants have already received seedlings and started vegetable farms. Over the next few months and years they will begin farming goats and chickens.

Collective Impact Necessary to End Hunger and Poverty

Yesterday I wrote about how well-managed livestock operations are key to Heifer International’s work of ending hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Today, I want to share with you how Heifer uses collective impact to take our community-transforming work to an even greater scale.

Collective impact – nonprofits, governments, the public, private and commercial businesses working together – may be a new term, but it is by no means a new idea or practice. It has been used in numerous sectors, and now we are using this broad, cross-sector support and coordination in agriculture, with promising results.

Collective impact is at the heart of our work in Haiti, in the Arkansas Delta and high-country area of Appalachia. All of these areas are reeling from generations of poverty and hunger, and all are peopled by hardscrabble, but determined families committed to their own success.

There is no silver bullet cure for any of these areas. All have been through years of aid with little success. But that is largely because the people were never invested in their own success. They were beneficiaries, but never participants. At Heifer, there is no success without full participation.

As an example of true collective impact, one Heifer project stands above all the others: The East Africa Dairy Development project in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

The project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is helping one million people – 179,000 families – living on small farms lift themselves out of poverty by helping them produce and market milk in a more profitable way.

Working with Gates, TechnoServe, the International Livestock Research Institute, World Agroforestry Centre and Africa Breeders Services, we are developing 30 milk-collection points for small farmers to join the growing dairy industry in East Africa. The project particularly targets women for both benefits and leadership and implements value chain elements, such as training 10,000 farmers to grow nutritious animal fodder to sell to dairy farmers as supplementary livestock feed.

The project has been so successful, so promising—it’s one of the leading market-oriented agro-livestock development initiatives in East Africa, earning the farming families more than $35 million—that Gates recently awarded an extension grant, and together we are exploring possible expansion into Tanzania and Ethiopia to help another 274,000 families.

Let me reiterate that success such as this is only possible because of the power of partnerships—collective impact. Every partner brings a separate and complementary expertise. Heifer, like other NGOs, has expertise in community development at a grassroots level; governments can assist with infrastructure and laws; for-profit companies and foundations such as Gates provide financial resources and intellectual property, even market demand for emerging markets in the same field, such as dairy.

And let’s never forget that for-profits and corporations can be mentors, partners and even buyers. It’s a complementary relationship for everyone, and a growing phenomenon, but it must be built around recharging agriculture.

Everyone agrees on the critical role agriculture will play in the future—of Africa, of Asia, of a world aimed at a global population of nine billion by 2050. But it will only come true if small farmers are brought fully into the agricultural value chain, and only if that chain stretches from the producer, the farmer, to the consumer, and ensures full participation along the way.

At Heifer International, we work with the poor smallholder farmer, with a focus on women because when women are given access to more income, they tend to spend it on their children and home, rather than squandering it. And if they had the same access to credit and land worldwide, they’d produce about 30 percent more food than men do on the same land.

So we help women not only improve crops and agricultural resources and practices, but we also strengthen their social capital through women’s empowerment, training, animal management and helping them create or become a part of critical mass – cooperatives that give them a greater stake in the value chain than just producing the food.

At the same time, we work with farmers to connect to others in the value chain—butchers, wholesalers, distributors—to develop competitive value chains to increase their productivity and incomes up and down the value chain, starting with farmers but also including processors, suppliers, transporters, exporters, retailers and others involved in rural wealth creation.

We also work to help them gain access to finance. Without this access, small farmers cannot take advantage of green revolution opportunities and technologies. Think about it. In Africa, for example, agriculture accounts for more than 40 percent of the GDP and employs about 70 percent of the people, mostly women; but less than one percent of total lending by commercial banks goes into agriculture.

So we work with partners across the value chain to reduce the risk of lending, to build confidence not only in the producing potential of the smallholder farmer, but in her ability to access and take advantage of new users and markets. We work, too, to harness the potential of technology, in fieldwork and in reporting.

Increasingly, the Internet, cellphone networks, radios and digital cameras are playing important roles in improving farming, improving breeds and spanning geographic distances to develop new and promising markets. Through our East Africa Dairy Development project, our partners and we have made important advances in evidence-based reporting. And not just of the production or economic capacity of farmers and others in the market chain, but of community development improvements—participation, gender equity, nutrition and better animal management and care.

These improvements are fostering community, regional and in some cases countrywide improvements. All of these successes produce “ripple effects,” which can help induce private investments for future growth. The net effect is to create improved economic stability and food security for everyone.

Unless we act in a unified and committed way, the age of the unthinkable is almost upon us. Let me quickly recap—population growth, climate change, accelerating information, technology, amazing genomic technology, advanced organic practices, robotics and rapid economic growth in non-western economies are all converging.

This convergence will force us to respond in ways that are not yet fully vetted. We know that women smallholder farmers will be at the epicenter of the changes we will need to make. Public-private partnerships provide a fabulous platform for us to start.

The next few years will be exciting and full of promise. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than working in partnership with you all as we pursue the end of hunger and the end of poverty and restoring our beautiful home.

But continued progress will require unity across the private sector, NGOs, agribusiness and government. All global citizens must take ownership of what threatens our world. As it is said in Kenya, “Harambee.” Together we can do it.

Heifer China Family Continues Improving Farm and Home

In the time since our last post, Heifer China participant Chang Julan’s family suffered a loss of livestock. Seven sows all became pregnant, but in May one of the sows had a difficult pregnancy and died, taking with her at least 10 unborn piglets. Now Julan’s family only has six sows and eight young pigs for fattening. During these months they also bought 20 piglets since the selling price this year was relatively low. Ms. Chang also decided to continue to raise sows and to increase her flock of chickens.

Although the whole house has yet to be whitewashed, the Chang family has completed their new kitchen along with the remainder of the renovations. They now have a hard stable floor and ceramic tiles beneath the stove. In April they installed a protective railing around the first floor windows and the second floor balcony. The family now also has running water and the ability to burn firewood, and the use of electric and biogas-fueled cooking. Ms. Chang is committed to environmental preservation, and in the future wants to focus more on the use of biogas.

Ms. Chang’s son, Yang Jiusong, has completed the High School-placement exam at the Northern Vocational Middle School in Guangyuan City, and is still at school preparing to take a computer aptitude exam. Ms. Chang’s husband, Yang Yongguang, works in Guangyuan City as a day-laborer, although both husband and wife are also busy clearing weeds from the cornfields.

Recently Chang Julan purchased a water tower in preparation for installing running water in the bathroom, so as to be able to better clean the toilet and to shower. She plans to install a solar heater. Ms. Chang has also bought two electric fans and a scale; the scale is for weighing pigs when she’s selling them, and for organizing the fodder by weight.

The entirety of the countryside was busy for a month, until early June when it all was finally over. In late Autumn the Chang family sowed over 1 mu (about 1.5 acres) of rapeseed, collecting more than 400 jin (440 pounds); sowed over 2 mu (about 3.25 acres) of wheat, collecting more than 1000 jin (1,102 pounds); irrigated 4 mu (about 6.5 acres) of paddies; and planted 2 mu (about 3.25 acres) of corn. Lastly, they also planted sweet potatoes, peanuts, red beans, green string beans, and cucumbers, along with other assorted vegetables.

Measuring Impact is Critical to Tracking Success

Yesterday I shared with you how important community development is to true economic development in impoverished communities. Today, I want to share the importance of measuring impact in ensuring Heifer International’s efforts around the world are working.

At Heifer, impact is essential to prove the progress and transformation we promise to donors, and also necessary to show funders such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank the change they are making possible. For that we track data points such as nutrition, access to water, income, diet, and productive capacity—global baseline indicators. It gives us the ability not only to report out on improvements, but also to adapt in a very dynamic world.

Today we don’t have the luxury of waiting—our families don’t have the luxury of waiting—for data. Real life is real time, so we need the ability to see into what is happening in our projects at any given point in time and to adapt and adjust as needed.

Impact in Peru

So serious is this for us that in 2005 we contracted with evaluators from Western Michigan University to conduct thorough explorations of our work. The researchers visited 140 Heifer projects in 20 countries and interviewed 5,000 Heifer program participants, measuring accountability and transparency, community spirit, gender equity, training, diets, incomes, the health and care of livestock and environment.

Post review, Western Michigan University evaluators reported that, “It is beyond doubt that in all 20 of the countries we have examined, Heifer has brought large overall benefits to very large numbers of low income rural families.” Those benefits were all products of the collective impact we talk about, the cross-sector cooperation and collaboration.

Our monitoring and evaluation efforts have also been recently highlighted in a Hilton Laureate Sourcebook, along with work by Operation Smile, Partners in Health and Women for Women. Knowledge centers such as these are key for all of us as we move forward, for just as important as the agricultural focus is a need to utilize new and promising technology into our work—all our work.

Impact in Peru

Technology isn’t just a timesaver or a money-saver; it’s proving that its most important role is fast becoming a lifesaver, as we saw in Haiti and China after earthquakes and Uganda after mudslides. Internet access, web-based applications, smart cell phone networks, radios, even digital cameras are all important tools for our future and that of the smallholder farmer.

All of this reflects Norman Borlaug’s legacy. He was a pioneer of the power of public-private partnerships, of the importance of education and training, of blending holistic solutions with science to create sustainable solutions for a hungry world. He created the primer we all use in one way or another to enable families here and everywhere to feed themselves, and to do it in a way that improves, not demeans, the planet.

Norman Borlaug said two things that stand out for me personally. The first, that, “Food is the moral right of all who are born into this world,” is so hugely important right now.

With food prices rising, the climate undergoing dramatic change, access to healthy, affordable, nutritious food is critically important, not only to a population that is both growing and growing more hungry, but for a stable world. There can be no lasting peace as long as there are starving, suffering people.

Norman Borlaug also said that there are no miracles in agricultural production. I can’t say that I agree with him on that, at least not wholly. For I, like you, have witnessed miracle after miracle in food production, by families who, when provided some help, some training, some tools and resources, have used their own energy, their own ideas and their own entrepreneurship to grow great bounty, to build complex businesses out of what most of us would consider a miniscule investment.

I believe that there are miracles in agricultural production—every day, here in the United States as we see a renewed interest in farming by young people, a renewed interest in knowing the source of our food and sourcing locally, and around the world as smallholder farmers work, first to become self-determining and self-sustaining, and then to connect and contribute to the food and value chain so that they can help feed the world.

So, how do we do that? Well, “it begins with a cow…”

No matter where in the world you go, Heifer’s there, and success is just a project participant away. Heifer empowers families to escape poverty, surpass sustenance and achieve significant success.

Fishing off the coast of Ecuador

A group of determined fishermen and women in Ecuador no longer pay exorbitant fees to rent a boat and dock. They developed a plan to purchase their own and, within two years, did just that. Read Sustainable Fishing on the Ecuador Coast to learn how they are planning to expand their fleet.

Choratan is a beautiful, yet dangerous, cross-border village in Armenia. Despite living in the constant shadow of Azeri snipers, residents continue to work hard for a better life. Cow Becomes ’Helper and Feeder’ for Lazaryan Family tells the success story of one tight-knit family and their cow.

Drought: We’re All In This Together

It seems like we’ve talked a lot about drought on this blog lately. Last year at this time we were calling attention to the Horn of Africa. Since then we’ve talked about the Sahel region in West Africa and even more recently about the dry conditions that have been wreaking havoc for farmers right here in the United States.

But yesterday’s op-ed by Roger Thurow over at Farmers Feeding the World serves as a reminder that, no matter where farmers are struggling to coax their seedlings out of the ground, drought affects all of us everywhere.

Thurow begins with an anecdote about a Kenyan farmer praying for rain, knowing that if the rains did not come, he could not eat. That prayer, Thurow tells us, was offered in March of 2011. He then draws the parallel that that prayer could be uttered by a number of farmers—large-scale or small—in many parts of the world. The difference is, the United States has safety nets for farmers whose yields are lower than normal whereas farmers in the developing world typically do not.

And that’s the crux of Thurow’s piece. Just like the farmer in Kenya who says he’ll pray for rain for the farmers in Texas, so should all of us support the efforts of agencies, organizations, governments, and any other entity working to expand and improve agricultural development in the places where farmers aren’t guaranteed help if their crop fails.

Like Thurow says, “we’re all in this together.”

 

Feeding the World While the Earth Cooks

Today in Washington, D.C., Arizona State University, the New America Foundation and Slate magazine are tackling the sticky subject of how to feed the world as population swells and climate changes in both extreme and subtle ways to threaten vital crops around the world.

Tune in to hear the conversation and review the agenda on topics including:

“The Collision Course: Rising Demands on a Hotter Planet,” “Will New Seeds Conquer the New Climate,” “Where’s the Beef: Your Hamburger in 2050,” “The Next Green Revolution: Is There an App for That?” and “Business as Usual: Toward Global Adaptation.”

In the session on “How to Avert a Food Crisis,” guided by David Biello of the Scientific American, Hans Herren, 1995 World Food Prize winner and president of the Millennium Institute and USAID climate specialist Ed Carr of the University of South Carolina discuss what can be done now.

“What we don’t need is more food,” Herren said. “We grow enough for 2,500 calories per person now. What we do need is diversity, different varieties of food grown in more places.”

“We cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it,” Herren concluded. “We need more production developing countries. In places where we now have food deficits, we can easily double or triple food production and access. We just have to change our thinking.”

It’s erroneous to ignore local knowledge when dreaming up solutions to food scarcity, Carr said. “When you look at climate trends these farmers are already coping with tremendous variability in climate. Do not underestimate how smart these famers are and consider that they are already adjusting crops based on markets and climate while development experts debate the best way to do it.”
