Heifers on the Red Carpet

The awards season is here, and we at Heifer International are beyond delighted to accept this nomination!

This week we learned that we’re finalists for a min Best of the Web Award for work on our brand new tablet edition of World Ark magazine. min, short for Media Industry News, is a resource for magazine and media professionals to learn about the latest trends in the field. Heifer is a finalist in the digital magazine category, competing against the likes of dash magazine, EBONY.com, EE Times, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Popular Science and WIRED.

World Ark, the quarterly print magazine for Heifer donors and anyone interested in hunger and poverty, has had an online presence for years. But in December of 2012 we launched an interactive tablet edition for iPads and Androids that incorporates news from the field, facts about development work around the world and ways readers can get involved, along with dynamic, gorgeous design by the talented screen wizards at Bates Creative. This tablet version is free and available on the App Store or on Google Play. The Spring 2013 edition should be available within the week.

Sure, we’re new to this scene and just beginning to get a handle on the amazing new ways we can reach, inform and inspire readers via a tablet format. But we’re hopeful this nomination will help us spread the word about the brilliant and hardworking Heifer project partners that we feature in each issue.

Longtime supporter and author Patrick Rothfuss, founder of the charity Worldbuilders, which raises funds for Heifer International, tells us about his rival and antagonist Anton Strout, who very generously will donate $1 (matched dollar for dollar by publisher Penguin Books), for every preorder of his next book, Alchemystic. To find out how to preorder yours, take a look at Patrick’s blog post.

Author Jan Lebak liked this idea so much that she decided to make her own offer: Preorder her book, The Wrong Enemy (release date is 9/28), and she will donate $1 to Heifer International as well.

We’d like to thank Jason Tomaszewski, EducationWorld Social Media Editor, who wrote a great review of Heifer International’s new Read to Feed site.

And thanks to Michael Fullam for giving us a shout-out on his blog, It’s NOT about me. I like his words: “I write here about giving back – Heifer International is more like giving forward.”

Runners and walkers participated in the I Heart Kids and Cows 5K Fun Run/Walk in Anchorage, Alaska, yesterday. Proceeds raised will be donated to Heifer International and Covenant House Alaska, which assists homeless youth.

The children raised enough money to purchase a cow, goat and pig to help families in need. Learn more about Animal Crackers.

This blogger just exercised his way to buying a goat for a poor farmer in Africa using EarndIt. Not only did he earn points toward a goat, he has seen improvements in his own exercise tracking. A win-win for everyone.

The Red Cross website features a story of impact that programs and partnerships have on people living with HIV and their families. The story is about Daoud, and 18-year-old from Kanembwa, Tanzania, he is participating in the Tanzania Red Cross Society’s Integrated HIV program, which has partnered with Heifer International’s livestock experts to teach vulnerable children like Daoud to raise chickens for food and to sell. He is the oldest of five siblings who lost their parents years ago. A very inspiring story.

Fundraisers can be simple and fun, like this one in Madbury, NH. Guests enjoyed dinner and a movie Thursday night and benefited Heifer International at the same time at Union Congregational Church. After enjoying an Italian Dinner, guests watched “Hoot,” and learned a little bit more about the work we do at Heifer International.

Alamance Presbyterian Church’s youth group stayed several days at Overlook Farm,  Heifer International’s learning center in Rutland, Massachusetts. There are several great blog posts about it, but this one’s headline caught my eye: Day Two: Poop and Fences. How could you not read that?

Heifer International is featured on the Inspiring Generosity blog, with a post that discusses how we use our digital content to inspire and share our story. It’s a great behind-the-scenes-look at one aspect of our communications efforts.
