Climate Change and the Hungry

In the last few years we’ve seen how the changing climate has affected vulnerable people and places. Famine was declared in Somalia last year after the annual rains failed. Millions more are on the brink of famine in the Sahel right now for similar reasons. Food prices jumped at the beginning of 2012 after an extremely cold winter in Europe drove up the price wheat and extreme heat in Southern Africa did the same for maize and other crops.

If these trends continue, it’s possible that the number of hungry will rise by 20% according to the World Health Organization. The numbers were announced at last week’s Rio+20 summit in Brazil. 

From the article: The WHO analysis shows that of the 495 million women and children under age 5 who are undernourished, 150 million live in Africa, 315 million in Asia and 30 million in Latin America and the Caribbean. It expects about 465 million more will live in developing countries by 2020, boosting food demand.

While it is important that those who need emergency aid receive it, news like this requires planning for the long term. Heifer International focuses on exactly that: long-term solutions that enable small farmers to be better prepared when crises hit.

Malaria=Poverty=Malaria

Today is World Malaria Day, which might have slipped your mind. That’s understandable. The United States eradicated malaria in 1951, and unless you’ve done much traveling it’s probably never topped your list of things to worry about. But for half the world’s population, the 3.3 billion people threatened by the deadly mosquito-borne illness every day, malaria isn’t so easy to forget.

Malaria symptoms include fever, headache, chills, vomiting, anemia and respiratory distress. Children infected with the disease are extremely vulnerable because they haven’t had time to develop any level of immunity.

Malaria is a mean disease that preys on the poor and the innocent. In 2010, 90 percent of all malaria deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa, the region of our planet that’s home to the highest proportion of undernourished people. Poor people with limited resources and limited access to health care often can’t afford housing with screened windows and doors to protect them from infected mosquitoes. And once infected, people suffering from malaria lose work days and the paychecks that go along with them, deepening their poverty. This is a handicap faced by countless Heifer project participants who can find themselves incapacitated by malaria multiple times each year.

Most deaths from malaria claim children under the age of 5. That means that every single minute of the day, a child dies of malaria. Pregnant women also face heightened risk.These numbers will knock the breath out of you, but luckily they’re better than they used to be. Malaria mortality rates have fallen by more than 25 percent since 2000. And with continued use of mosquito nets and insecticides, the hope is that the disease will continue to loosen its grasp.

The theme for World Malaria Day 2013 is “Invest in the future. Defeat malaria.” The disease still kills 660,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization. But not everyone agrees on the numbers, and in fact, the Seattle-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation puts the death toll at 1.2 million per year. I know that number will be stuck in my head for a while.

Happily, we know that bed nets, insecticides and improved housing can slow or stop the spread of malaria. We also know how to treat it. It’s just a question of resources. Strengthening the Dairy Industry in Africa

As I spoke yesterday morning at the International Dairy Federation’s World Dairy Summit 2012, I focused my presentation on Heifer International’s work to build social capital and engage the smallholder farmer. From my first visit to the field, until now, the truth remains the same: rural Africa is changing, and Heifer is proud to play a role. Not only does Heifer’s work empower smallholder farmers, it also enables them to take advantage of opportunities within their community to become a part of the dairy industry.

For Heifer’s work to assist more people, we have to increase the size of our projects while creating measurements on our successes and promoting effective, successful development models. To help create social capital, we have to put our project participants on the pathway to economic prosperity through sustainable development.

Through the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project, we are doing just that. EADD is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has, to date, helped 189,281 families. Heifer partners with TechnoServe, the International Livestock Research Institute, the World Agroforestry Center and the American Breeders Services Total Cattle Management Limited to implement this comprehensive dairy industry project. EADD has made impressive progress in all three countries of implementation (Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda) in increasing the incomes of dairy households and promoting the commercialization of the smallholder dairy industry. By bringing smallholder farmers to form cooperatives in their communities, Heifer helps them have a stake and voice in how the “business” of dairy unfolds. Farmers now understand how to improve their livelihood security through the production of high quality milk. Not only has milk production increased dramatically in these countries, but the milk quality has also improved.

Farmers are now encouraged and inspired to become even more knowledgeable in the dairy industry to not only help their families achieve income and food security, but also continue to create a successful cooperative that incorporates the entire community. Though all of these efforts take time, it’s imperative to build social capital and effective training for lifting individuals and communities out of poverty for good.

One of our great success stories is Madeleine Madamu from Rwanda, a Heifer International EADD participant. For Madeleine and her family, the journey has been long, but they only look to the future with hope. “With just one cow, our lives have completely changed, when I look back to my days of extreme poverty, it seems so long ago and yet I do not forget that as a women, I have had to work extra hard to provide for my family. The determination of a woman is endless, we never give up hope, we just pick up the pieces and move on.”  Through Madeleine’s determination, she participates in the dairy cooperative that will help her reach her full potential to provide for her family.

For smallholder dairy farmers, social capital is vital. Without it, farmers will not have successful, sustainable changes to their lives.

Heifer International at the World Dairy Summit 2012

World Dairy Summit 2012This week, Heifer CEO and President, Pierre Ferrari was asked to speak at the International Dairy Federation’s World Dairy Summit in Cape Town, South Africa. The World Dairy Summit brings together individuals and organizations around the globe that are involved in working in the dairy sector. This year’s theme, “A World in One Country,” reflects the diversity seen in South Africa’s farming systems, climates, markets and cultures. The conference is devoted to the dairy industry in emerging countries, with a focus on how the socioeconomic benefits of the business on smallholder famers.

By 2030, it’s estimated that the global demand for food will be up by 30 percent as the population continues to rise. As the food security need will increase, it’s important that Heifer continues to work within communities to provide them the tools they need to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty: training and livestock.

In order to address these concerns, the summit topics focus on: developing innovative ideas for the dairy sector; the health benefits of consuming dairy; and how to create a holistic, sustainable approach to dairying that protects the environment. By learning how other organizations are working with dairy cooperatives, Heifer’s East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) program can learn to further improve sustainability in the dairy value chain. Heifer’s work with EADD brings smallholder farmers in communities together into cooperatives to better position them to sell their surplus milk. Through Heifer’s work, smallholder farmers receive more training to strengthen their businesses and earn more income to provide for their families.

As Heifer’s CEO and President takes part in the 2012 World Dairy Summit, our message is simple: Heifer’s farmers are not just providing milk in a growing dairy industry, they’re creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening their communities.

Heifer International’s model of change hinges on education. The importance of training participants and its correlation to success cannot be overstated.

While many farmers may have the correct supplies, success often remains elusive because they don’t have the proper training. In Vietnam, backyard chicken production is popular in rural areas. Diseases, weather conditions and lack of knowledge kept preventing the chicken farmers from prospering. Heifer International Vietnam held a Farmer Field School training where farmers shared their experiences and learned from each other. The training gave them the knowledge they needed to be successful.

Education also empowers disenfranchised groups. Mary Adhiambo Were’s husband died of HIV, and she struggled for years after his death. Family members of those with HIV often face rejection from the community. Mary joined a women’s cooperative where she learned how to increase her small farm’s yield. After receiving this training, Mary coaxed maximum productivity out of her farm using sustainable agricultural practices. Now, she sells milk, eggs, chickens and vegetables and bought two more acres of land with the profits from her endeavors.

Similarly, participation in Heifer International’s projects provides children with the opportunity for education. Kenflore, a 5-year-old living in Haiti, helps care for her family’s goats. The extra-income the gift of a goat provides will pay her school fees, setting her up for success.

From the Field: Heifer’s Work Around the World

One of Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development is Gender and Family Focus. This element is present in a variety of ways in Heifer’s projects. Women often represent their families in self-help groups (SHGs) and become models for their families and even communities.

The Strey Tbong Pich women’s group in Cambodia is now in its second year of a values-based literacy progam. Participants of all ages worked very hard, despite challenges such as last year’s flooding, and recently successfully completed their final exams.

Female agricultural service cooperative (ASC) representatives, including Heifer project leaders, recently visited Ukraine’s Parliament on Human Rights to share about gender-equity isses rural women face. This is an important step in improving gender equity throughout the country.  

Finally, meet Rose Were, a farmer in Kenya and former Heifer project participant, who hosted more than 400 farmers at her four-acre farm for a World Food Day celebration on October 16.

7 Things About Mt. Kilimanjaro

Recently I accompanied several employees of corporate supporter Elanco as they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and raised money for Heifer International. The trek was challenging and magnificent. Here are a few things that other sources may not tell you about climbing Kilimanjaro.

1. It’s not the climbing, it’s the altitude. So walk verrry sloooowly.climbing Kilimanjaro w Heifer

When someone asks if Kilimanjaro was hard, I don’t know what to say. Because, while walking up a rocky path for hours each day isn’t easy, the routes were not very difficult and the segments not long – until the summit day. My lungs complained much sooner than my legs did. No, the tough part was re-learning my body’s capabilities at altitude.

Normally, when I hike, I move at a good clip. So I was startled, within the first few minutes of the trek, to be told to follow behind the guide at a pace that I wouldn’t use for window-shopping at the mall. But as the days go on and I heard my breathing deepening, I became comfortable with going slowly. By the day of the summit attempt, I was grateful to climb at a speed that could be surpassed by my 85-year-old grandmother pulling a sledge of iron ore.

2. You’re cold.

Many nights on the mountain, I slept in a sleeping bag with liner, and long underwear, pants, fleeces, a jacket, and ski socks. And a stocking cap. And foot warmers. I lost all memory of what it might mean to be warm. On the morning of the summit, the water in our Camelbak tubes froze during the walk, and my toes went bitingly numb. Cameras often freeze up at the top. Afterward, the skin on my hands and windburned face became dry and tough.

 

3. And dirty.

In this weather, I didn’t mind not bathing for seven days. But I would’ve liked to get the grit out of my teeth. At the end of the dry season, when we climbed, the dust from the trail and campsites creeped into everything. Washing our hands twice a day was a lovely experience – until we grasped the zipper to enter a tent, and they were filthy once again. Applying sunscreen became, at some point, just an exercise in smearing dirt over your face.

4. You have to pee a lot.

To fight altitude sickness, it’s necessary to drink about three liters of water while climbing, in addition to plenty of hot teas and soups at every meal. This means that nearly every hour, like an anxious spaniel, I needed to rush behind a bush or rock to answer nature’s call. I thought a person would only experience this sort of inconvenience in pregnancy, but I was wrong. Continue reading

I just returned from two weeks in Tanzania. My Elanco colleagues and I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and raised over $7,000 for Heifer International, getting to know some amazing, hardworking Tanzanian porters and trip leaders in the process. We visited a children’s home in Rotia Valley and took a short safari trip into Ngorongoro Crater. We visited families who were recipients of camels, goats, cattle and chickens through their participation in projects with Heifer. We met with a 30-year veteran of Heifer Tanzania and a large Masai family in the bush. Considering our short time in the country, we saw a lot.

As Americans and Canadians, my colleagues and I are incredibly blessed with all of the resources and opportunities we have. Not because we earned them or deserve them, but simply by virtue of where we were born. It’s very easy for us to take for granted all that we have – it’s all we’ve ever known.

Most of the people we saw in Tanzania experience a much more grueling struggle for the basic necessities of life. Figuring out how to get enough water to drink or enough food to eat and how to transport that water and food is their daily travail. The dry season is long; getting enough rain can mean the difference between survival and starvation. The climate is changing, dry seasons are longer and rains come later. Jobs are scarce, unemployment is staggeringly high. Life is harsh.

I left Tanzania with mixed emotions. I was disheartened with the role of women, especially in the Masai culture. I felt very uncomfortable with what I spent on the climb itself – what a selfish use of money! I was surprised to see the steady stream of hikers and the swarms of support they require trekking up the mountain each day, and the debris the least conscientious climbers leave behind. The Ngorongoro Crater was filled with tourists in vehicle after vehicle, tearing through the dust. It seemed like an assault on an already stressed environment.

Yet the very crowds that concern me are putting food on the table for an army of porters and guides. Trekkers enable our climb leaders to send their children to good international schools and possibly to change their future.

The Heifer participant family we visited was proud of their farm and grateful for the help they had received. It was evident that that although life was still not easy, they could maintain an acceptable level of food security and the kids were all in school. The disabled matriarch of the family beamed when we met and gave us a heartfelt blessing before we left.

The Tanzanian people we met were happy and kind. I always felt safe. The group that I traveled with was amazing. We laughed a lot and bonded over ginger tea and soup. We made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro as a team, and shared tears of joy and amazement at our accomplishment. The entire trip exceeded all my expectations. It truly was a trip of a lifetime and I’m really glad I was able to go. Maybe as I share what I experienced with friends and co-workers, I can help tell the Tanzanian story. I’d like to think that I’ll never look at water or a warm shower quite the same.

Collective Impact Necessary to End Hunger and Poverty

Yesterday I wrote about how well-managed livestock operations are key to Heifer International’s work of ending hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Today, I want to share with you how Heifer uses collective impact to take our community-transforming work to an even greater scale.

Collective impact – nonprofits, governments, the public, private and commercial businesses working together – may be a new term, but it is by no means a new idea or practice. It has been used in numerous sectors, and now we are using this broad, cross-sector support and coordination in agriculture, with promising results.

Collective impact is at the heart of our work in Haiti, in the Arkansas Delta and high-country area of Appalachia. All of these areas are reeling from generations of poverty and hunger, and all are peopled by hardscrabble, but determined families committed to their own success.

There is no silver bullet cure for any of these areas. All have been through years of aid with little success. But that is largely because the people were never invested in their own success. They were beneficiaries, but never participants. At Heifer, there is no success without full participation.

As an example of true collective impact, one Heifer project stands above all the others: The East Africa Dairy Development project in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

The project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is helping one million people – 179,000 families – living on small farms lift themselves out of poverty by helping them produce and market milk in a more profitable way.

Working with Gates, TechnoServe, the International Livestock Research Institute, World Agroforestry Centre and Africa Breeders Services, we are developing 30 milk-collection points for small farmers to join the growing dairy industry in East Africa. The project particularly targets women for both benefits and leadership and implements value chain elements, such as training 10,000 farmers to grow nutritious animal fodder to sell to dairy farmers as supplementary livestock feed.

The project has been so successful, so promising—it’s one of the leading market-oriented agro-livestock development initiatives in East Africa, earning the farming families more than $35 million—that Gates recently awarded an extension grant, and together we are exploring possible expansion into Tanzania and Ethiopia to help another 274,000 families.

Let me reiterate that success such as this is only possible because of the power of partnerships—collective impact. Every partner brings a separate and complementary expertise. Heifer, like other NGOs, has expertise in community development at a grassroots level; governments can assist with infrastructure and laws; for-profit companies and foundations such as Gates provide financial resources and intellectual property, even market demand for emerging markets in the same field, such as dairy.

And let’s never forget that for-profits and corporations can be mentors, partners and even buyers. It’s a complementary relationship for everyone, and a growing phenomenon, but it must be built around recharging agriculture.

Everyone agrees on the critical role agriculture will play in the future—of Africa, of Asia, of a world aimed at a global population of nine billion by 2050. But it will only come true if small farmers are brought fully into the agricultural value chain, and only if that chain stretches from the producer, the farmer, to the consumer, and ensures full participation along the way.

At Heifer International, we work with the poor smallholder farmer, with a focus on women because when women are given access to more income, they tend to spend it on their children and home, rather than squandering it. And if they had the same access to credit and land worldwide, they’d produce about 30 percent more food than men do on the same land.

So we help women not only improve crops and agricultural resources and practices, but we also strengthen their social capital through women’s empowerment, training, animal management and helping them create or become a part of critical mass – cooperatives that give them a greater stake in the value chain than just producing the food.

At the same time, we work with farmers to connect to others in the value chain—butchers, wholesalers, distributors—to develop competitive value chains to increase their productivity and incomes up and down the value chain, starting with farmers but also including processors, suppliers, transporters, exporters, retailers and others involved in rural wealth creation.

We also work to help them gain access to finance. Without this access, small farmers cannot take advantage of green revolution opportunities and technologies. Think about it. In Africa, for example, agriculture accounts for more than 40 percent of the GDP and employs about 70 percent of the people, mostly women; but less than one percent of total lending by commercial banks goes into agriculture.

So we work with partners across the value chain to reduce the risk of lending, to build confidence not only in the producing potential of the smallholder farmer, but in her ability to access and take advantage of new users and markets. We work, too, to harness the potential of technology, in fieldwork and in reporting.

Increasingly, the Internet, cellphone networks, radios and digital cameras are playing important roles in improving farming, improving breeds and spanning geographic distances to develop new and promising markets. Through our East Africa Dairy Development project, our partners and we have made important advances in evidence-based reporting. And not just of the production or economic capacity of farmers and others in the market chain, but of community development improvements—participation, gender equity, nutrition and better animal management and care.

These improvements are fostering community, regional and in some cases countrywide improvements. All of these successes produce “ripple effects,” which can help induce private investments for future growth. The net effect is to create improved economic stability and food security for everyone.

Unless we act in a unified and committed way, the age of the unthinkable is almost upon us. Let me quickly recap—population growth, climate change, accelerating information, technology, amazing genomic technology, advanced organic practices, robotics and rapid economic growth in non-western economies are all converging.

This convergence will force us to respond in ways that are not yet fully vetted. We know that women smallholder farmers will be at the epicenter of the changes we will need to make. Public-private partnerships provide a fabulous platform for us to start.

The next few years will be exciting and full of promise. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than working in partnership with you all as we pursue the end of hunger and the end of poverty and restoring our beautiful home.

But continued progress will require unity across the private sector, NGOs, agribusiness and government. All global citizens must take ownership of what threatens our world. As it is said in Kenya, “Harambee.” Together we can do it.

From the Field: Heifer’s Work with Cooperatives Around the World

Today is World Food Day and this year’s theme, as announced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is “Agricultural Cooperatives – Key to Feeding the World.” Heifer empowers families around the world to achieve food security, and bringing them together as agricultual cooperatives is an effective method to end hunger and poverty. Learn more about Heifer’s cooperatives in the video and stories below.

In Cameroon, members of two self-help groups formed a dairy cooperative seven years ago. In addition to giving them food security, member families have tripled their income.

Hongyu’s Pastured Chicken Cooperative in China recently opened its own store. Now members sell the chickens they raise directly to consumers, with no need for a middleman.

Corina de Jesús Ramirez lives in Nicaragua. Joining a coffee cooperative has given her access to credit, better prices and technical assistance to improve both quantity and quality of production on her farm. Claudio Hernández Vásquez also belongs to a coffee co-op in Nicaragua. His success with growing coffee has allowed him to expand farming activities to include poultry, pigs, vegetables and basic grains.

Marfusha Cooperative was founded in Ukraine in 2009. This milk co-op, which started out small, now provides collection and cooling services and sells high-quality milk to the local Danone plant.

Food Security in South Africa: A State of Crisis

Food security in South Africa is more elusive than it may appear. Food security means knowing where your next meal is coming from. It means not having to worry about whether your children will get sick because they don’t have the right foods. Twenty years ago, most food insecure people in the world lived in the poorest nations. Today, on World Food Day, as much as three quarters of poor, food insecure households live in so-called Middle Income Countries like China, India and South Africa.

The South African government estimates that approximately 11 million people in South Africa are food insecure out of a population of 50 million. This is roughly 1 out of every 5 people. Children are particularly affected by food insecurity. More than 20% of children in South Africa suffer from stunting because of poor nutrition.

Although South Africa is a relatively wealthy country compared to many other countries on the African continent, the difficult history of apartheid has created a situation of extreme inequality. While some people can afford to eat in expensive restaurants, many others – often living just a few miles away – don’t know where their children’s next meal is coming from.

Food Security in South Africa: More Difficult for the Rural Poor

Rural South African families suffer the most. 70% of all poor people in South Africa live in rural communities. Most of them have a little bit of land and try to grow some food but their farming activities rarely meet even their basic food needs. These are the people Heifer International South Africa helps. Through improved agricultural production on a small scale, they can improve the food their families eat and produce a little bit extra to sell.
Over the past 12 years, Heifer International South Africa has seen the Heifer model work over and over again in South Africa. Julia Ngwana used to beg for work at her daughters’ school to be able to feed her family. Since joining Heifer’s Saambandou Project, she has been able not only to provide healthy food but also to send her youngest daughter, Dakalo, to university.

Mr Albert Makhohliso’s goat and vegetable production finally made it possible, at age 65, to earn enough income to support his sons’ education, after years of unemployment.
Mrs Nuleka Tinga, a single mother supporting 5 children and 4 grandchildren said, “It changed our lives for the better [when] I was given cows. I managed to feed my family and provide for them through the assistance of Heifer. I’m very grateful. Heifer helped me and my family very much; I was motivated to start my own homestead garden so that I could get nutrients from vegetables and sell them as well.” Mrs Tinga’s cow didn’t only help her family. As soon as her cow produced a female calf, she passed on (donated) the calf to another family, so that they, too, could enjoy the benefits. Mrs Tinga also passed on in June 2011.

South Africa’s thriving economy excludes people like Albert, Julia and Nuleka. No matter how hard they work, they simply do not have the skills, knowledge and resources to access the formal economy on their own. Through Heifer International South Africa’s projects, these poor, rural families can finally take part in economic development and benefit through increased production, earning an income and finally achieving regular access to healthy, tasty food for themselves and their families.

Rural Women Will Make It So

In addition to being Blog Action Day, today is also International Day of Rural Women. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in his message for today, stated, “Empowering rural women is crucial for ending hunger and poverty. By denying women rights and opportunities, we deny their children and societies a better future.” We couldn’t agree more. I have been traveling recently to our project sites in Africa, and I’d like to share my reflections on one of my field visits.

Today’s visits were a lesson in what rural women, in this case African women in a remote Zambian village, can do given a few assets and a little bit of opportunity. This morning, after a long, bumpy drive across stretches of dried up farmland in the increasingly hot sun, we arrive at the home of 53 year-old Mrs. Flora Monga. Dressed in her bright blue shirt and flashing a megawatt smile she welcomes us heartily, and after initial greetings she leads us to her cowshed and starts telling us all the things she has been able to do since she received two draft cattle from Heifer in 2009. She remembers the date as if it were her birthday: January 1. From those first two animals, she now has four, which have gone a long way to helping the former housewife improve life for her husband and six children, aged 16 to 22. “In the first year we received the animals we harvested 69 bags of food from our 10 hectares of land,” she recalls. She goes on to say that in 2010 she harvested 150 bags, then she flips frantically through the ledger in her hand, a record book, to show us the evidence and adds proudly that in the second year she harvested 200 bags; soy beans, cow peas, sweet potatoes.

Asked if the animals produce milk she says “Yes, about two and a half liters per day.” Not enough to sell for any significant income, but more than enough to satisfy her big family. She beckons to her grandchild on the other side of the yard and shows off her healthy, beautiful face.

Flora tells me that for the purposes of the project she insisted the animals be given to her using her maiden name. I ask her why, and she smiles at me wryly; “Because I wanted it to be in my name,” she says. Her husband, Benson, is very supportive. The manure they collect from their animal shed, added to the increased capacity to cultivate land that draft animals provide have meant many happy returns for the family. She tells us about the grain mill they bought last year to grind their maize, a machine that cost approximately $1,600. Then she ushers all of us into the new house she and her husband are building, a three bedroom brick and concrete house with a tin roof, a far cry from the mud and thatch hut they once called home. There are bags of cement in the hallway, waiting to be used to finish the house. In one room, bags of grain from the farm are piled high almost to the ceiling, ready for market.

Under a tarp in the foyer is a brand new milling machine that the couple just bought with cash, for which they paid 23.5 million Zambian Kwacha, the equivalent of $4,700. With this she will be able to grind not just her grain but that of her neighbors for a fee. She names off her sources of income: 2,000 Kwacha ($4) per meter of land ploughed when she rents out her animals, 1,500 Kwacha for every five kilograms of grain ground. From the grain her neighbors grind, she keeps the bran to feed her animals as it is of no use to her neighbors. This reduces her feed costs.

I ask her about the bag of charcoal in her hallway, asking her what she will do about her fuel needs. She tells me that her next plan is to buy and install a solar panel as an alternative source of energy. “We want to be drinking cold water in this house,” she adds as if in prophecy. I smile at her and nod, and we exchange a high five. I know that from a woman like this with big dreams and big plans, a declaration like that is bound to happen, because she will make it so.
