Agriculture Improves Incomes in Central America

Heifer is working with communities in Honduras and Guatemala to create livestock and agriculture businesses, which help residents overcome poverty and malnutrition. Pierre Ferrari, Heifer’s President and CEO, visited these projects in March 2013 and attended a Passing on the Gift® (POG) ceremony in Guatemala. There, project participants gave him a goat to symbolize their gift to Heifer to pass on to communities around the world.

BHARATPUR, Nepal—A Heifer Passing on the Gift® ceremony is filled with moments of joy and playfulness, more than a touch of chaos and the pure pride of recipients who in an instant become donors to other women in need in their community. Heifer executive staff and Board of Directors members celebrated with hundreds of families in three villages in the Chitwan region of Nepal this week.

President and CEO Pierre Ferrari, in Bharatpur for a 13th generation celebration, took the opportunity to pass on a symbolic goat from San Carlos Alzatate village in Guatemala.

“This goat is a representation of the global community and the solidarity we all have for each other,” Ferrari said, who traveled to Guatemala just before the Nepal trip. “The women in Guatemala want you to know that you are not alone, and they salute your success amid the real challenges that they also face. The key to understand is that together there is nothing we cannot do.”

Heifer Board of Directors Vice Chair Arlene Falk Withers also spoke at the celebration, praising all the women present for their hard work and impressive returns on the investment of animals and training they received from Heifer.

“We want you to know how proud we are of you,” Withers said. “We know that you’ll go on to do tremendous things in the future.”

NOW I Pass On The Gift

NOW PSA photoPassing on the Gift® (POG) is fundamental to our work. It creates a cycle of giving, transforming recipients into donors, and expanding the network of hope, dignity and self-reliance.

For our project participants, it is a joyful experience to pass on the gift of livestock and training. Stories about Heifer’s POGs, like those below, can be found on our website. What amazes me most is that many project participants don’t stop after passing on gifts just once.

They do this by continuing to pass on the gifts of livestock, opening their farms to be training facilities, sharing the training they receive with everyone they meet, and more. They take to heart what it truly means to Pass on the Gift. They are so thankful and proud that they can’t help but tell others.

It is humbling to see project participants pass on part of their livelihood to their neighbors in need, creating a web of support and a world of good. We will end hunger together.

Where Empathy Comes From—Us!

puppy-fawnWe all need a little inspiration from time to time. Heifer, and especially its supporters, inspire me. There is incredible vision—meaning the ability to really see others and a way to help them—behind every donor’s contribution, large and small. I am proud to have written an article about Heifer’s work in East Africa for the current edition of World Ark.  I am also incredibly glad to have read this current edition, February 2013, cover to cover.

In this edition, Austin Bailey, World Ark senior editor, writes an excellent piece about Growing Kindness. I am a parent, and someone who struggles to be less self-centered. For me, Bailey’s reflections on how to sow the seeds of kindness and caring in her young sons hit home.

I read Bailey’s article with great interest, filed it somewhere in the back of my head, and moved on. A few weeks later, I came across an article on The Six Habits of Highly Empathic People while researching something for work. I immediately clicked. Or rather, things immediately started to click for me.

I had been researching something called collaborative consumption and was reading a wonderful online magazine devoted to the topic called Shareable.net. Shareable had republished (with permission of course) the empathy article (more on that later).

I quickly skimmed the six habits: “Cultivate curiosity about strangers,” explained the article. “Challenge prejudices,” “discover commonalities,” and “try another person’s life.” Listen to others, and open up about yourself. Inspire action and social change with an ambitious imagination. When I first glanced at the list, I must admit I saw it as a checklist. “How many of these do I get?” I thought to myself.  If I can check four out of six, am I empathetic enough?

As I was trying to tally my self-righteous empathy score, Bailey’s World Ark article on kindness came to mind. It was then I made an important connection. Empathy is not a competitive commodity. As the root of kindness, empathy is an ongoing, unfinished action. Put another way, the habits of empathy I was reading about were not a checklist, but an ever-present to-do list.

Though I saw it on Shareable, The Six Habits of Highly Empathic People originally appeared on the Greater Good website. Greater Good is the online presence of a science center at the University of Berkeley that “studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being, and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society.”

Such a society sounds grand, and elusive, especially if it’s left up to limited people like me to create it. Fortunately it is not.

The point of the empathy article, of Bailey’s original piece in World Ark, and of the scientists studying how to build a thriving and compassionate world is that better behavior and an overall better place are actionable and achievable. Achievable now, in individual choices and small actions.

But it takes work, and it takes a lot of us working together.

If you delve into the Greater Good website at all (and I highly recommend you do), you will learn a lot about how and why to pursue this goal. One common theme underlying these efforts is the importance of paying attention and really seeing others. Heifer supporters show this incredible vision again and again.

Holding signs that read, “Women are the key to community development,” Nepali women celebrated International Women’s Day by marching together through their villages. Through accountability and leadership development, numerous women have established a deep commitment to the Cornerstones. More than 20,000 original families have benefited from this dedication in just over one year.

Heifer Philippines held 12 Cornerstones Workshops in that country’s Caraga region preparing participants for involvement in the area’s first dairy project. The project will reach 400 original partner families and another 800 families through POG. After the workshops, participants agreed that the Cornerstones helped them realize the value of working together and how to nuture that gift. 

Hmayak Najaryan, 40, of Khachaghbyur, Armenia, was trying to support his wife and two sons on little more than $100 a month. In partnership with Ashtarak Kat CJSC, Heifer Armenia provided alfalfa seeds, a milk cooling tank and artificially inseminated the family’s cow. Now Hmayak’s sons, who want to become educated professionals, have a stronger foundation on which to grow and dream.

Empowering Women to… Empower Women

Editor’s note: Empowering women is at the core of Heifer International’s model for sustainable development. In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, this week we are sharing stories of the women with whom Heifer works, who take the gifts of livestock and education to produce extraordinary results for themselves, their families and their communities.

Women are on the rise in Rwanda. The country’s constitution requires that 30% of its parliament be women, and Odette Uwamariya, governor of the Eastern Province of Rwanda says women now make up more than half the parliament. “Fifty-six point two percent,” Charles Kayumba, Heifer’s Rwanda country director, clarifies. Even better.

This beautiful country, once so torn by civil war and later genocide, now knows almost no crime. Economic growth is at about 7%. Is it all due to women? Clearly, there are many factors at work here. But it’s significant that the genocide left the country 70% female. Women virtually had no choice but to step up to the work of re-building a nation.

Even with the development so evident in the capital city of Kigali, hunger and malnutrition are still the biggest problems in the provinces. Heifer has helped more than 40,000 families feed themselves and earn a living, most of them female-headed. The government of Rwanda has taken notice and started a program modeled on Heifer’s. The families who receive cows from the government are required to pass on the gift of the cow’s offspring to someone else in the community. Sound familiar? In many areas of the country, the government has turned to the experts– asking Heifer to oversee the program.

“I want to acknowledge and recognize Heifer International for the good work they are doing here, and Dr. Kayumba for managing this program,” said Madame Uwamariya at our recent meeting in Rwamagana, the seat of the Eastern Province. Particularly among those affected by HIV, “we have seen tremendous changes after working with Heifer in terms of nutrition and income levels in the community,” Uwumariya reported.

A case in point is Nyirafaranga Liberathe, who lives in Rwinkavu Sector, Kayonza District. She is HIV positive, lost her husband during the genocide and now cares for three children and two grandchildren. When she first began taking medication for HIV in 2005, her antibody count (the bodies that fight infection) was around 96. Medication brought the number up to about 300. Since she began working with a Heifer goat project in 2010, she has been drinking goat’s milk regularly and eating more and better vegetables from her garden. Her antibody count now is at 926.

The transformation Liberathe has undergone is not just physical, though. Before she began working with Heifer, she felt separated from her community, guilty even. She kept her condition to herself. She lived in fear of poverty, of having nothing. Now, she says, “I feel stronger and am accepted by the community. I have food, I’m fine.” She realizes she now has hope, and a future. “I have helped another family [through POG], I am free from debt, I feel excitement and am happy to be able to assist someone else in need.”

Just as Liberathe has undergone a transformation, so has Rwanda, helped along by strong women… and Heifer International. You can see it in the landscape, in the city, in the countryside, and especially in the eyes of the Heifer project participants. Empowering women through development may not solve all the world’s problems, but after visiting Rwanda, it’s interesting to wonder just what might happen if more women in more places were given more tools and training. Imagine the transformation…

Heifer Haiti Trains Animal Workers

Yesterday morning, Heifer Haiti began a second round of training for 23 new Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs, commonly called vet agents in Haiti) for the northern and Central Plateau regions. A total of 60 CAHWs will be trained by the end of June 2013 for Heifer’s Rural Entrepreneurs for Agricultural Cooperation in Haiti (REACH) program.

These 23 candidates will receive three weeks of intensive training in animal care and will return home to practice for a period of two-to-three months. Later they will return for the final phase of the training, which will last another two-to-three weeks. Upon successful completion of the training, they will receive an official certificate from the government of Haiti, through the Ministry of Agriculture, which will authorize them to work as vet agents anywhere in the country.

The remaining candidates will be trained in April and May of this year.

Haiti REACH Begins Training Goat Breeders

This week, Heifer Haiti and local partner organization, Tèt kole, held a three-day training for a group of goat breeding center owners in Montrouis in western Haiti. This group of owners are part of the first cohort of Heifer’s REACH program.

A total of 22 participants, men and women, young and old, gathered from six of Haiti’s departments where REACH is implemented: Northeast, Northwest, Centre, Nippes, the West and the Grand’Anse. The owners met and networked with each other and learned more about Heifer International’s philosophy, history and methods.

Training topics included Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development, the general context of livestock production in Haiti, importance of breeding centers, breeding center care and characteristics, animal production techniques, animal health and wellbeing, forage management, business management, marketing and others. Future plans include visiting successful commercial farms in the Dominican Republic.

Participants were pleased with the trainings, as they will be better prepared to manage the important work of breeding center ownership. Although many have backgrounds in agriculture and livestock, the introduction to new operating techniques and skills will set them up for success.

This diverse group of producers and goat breeding center owners became aligned around a common target during the training: the success of REACH on an individual scale, and ultimately improving the fates of their communities.

When asked about the importance of Heifer’s REACH program, participants said they think it is timely, because they were missing the tools for success. They are confident this program will benefit their respective communities and the entire country.

This introductory training session will not only help breeding center owners modernize their farming practices, it also serves as the launching pad for the REACH program. Training participants before had a common passion for agriculture and livestock; as a result of the training, they have become a group of budding entrepreneurs with the yearning for success within the program.

The signing of contracts between Heifer Haiti and this new group of entrepreneurial goat breeders marks a decisive step in the implementation of REACH. The participants would like to thank Heifer from the bottom of their hearts for this program, and Heifer wishes them well.

Ending Violence Against Women Through Social Change

In our hometown paper here in Little Rock, Ark., news of murder and rape charges against five of the men accused of gang-raping a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in India made the front page today. The attack and subsequent uprising and cry for change is front and center in thousands of newspapers and online news sites around the world. If you aren’t paying attention, it’s time to start. This is an unprecedented moment in India’s history and in the cause of women’s rights around the world.

A report in The Guardian quotes Ranjana Kumari of the Centre for Social Research as saying “Can this grief, this anger at the brutalization and murder of a young woman result in positive change? What we are seeing on our streets is a defining moment of our democracy. … For decades, India’s endemic violence against women has been a defining issue for women’s groups and the rights movement, but for the first time the crime of sexual offense and rape has been taken up by the people themselves.”

Rapes have become frequent in India, with complaints increasing 25 percent from 2006 to 2011. More than 220,000 incidents were reported in 2011 alone, according to Indian government statistics cited in a CNN report. What’s notable is that now, finally, the issue is getting the global attention it deserves, though at the horrible cost of the brutality endured not just by the medical student who died of her injuries but also of the scores of women who bore the pain of such an attack in silence.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article cites Kishwar Desai’s opinion piece in The Indian Express that said the gang rape illustrated to some that “a certain class of men is deeply uncomfortable with women displaying their independence, receiving education and joining the workforce. The gang rape becomes a form of subduing the women, collectively, and establishing their male superiority.”

He goes on to say “the answer lies in correcting the manner in which families value men and women, and the emotional disconnect between them.”

Author Ranjana Kumari said “for decades, NGOs, women’s groups, human rights organizations have been pushing against this wall of institutional sexism; now a part of that wall has broken down and we must seize this moment.”

Heifer International includes gender equity training in its projects around the world, many of which include traditional cultures that limit the rights and freedoms of women. Special trainings just for men explain the value of women’s contributions and help them understand that working together will improve the lives of all, men, women and children. Women have their own sessions and organize in self-help groups to pool savings and start small businesses.

In Bangladesh, one of the gender equity trainings for men led Mohammad Huzzatullah, a man who had returned from work outside the country with means to make a difference, to sponsor his own women’s group. Every day, Heifer’s investment in women and training in women’s empowerment change lives. In just one example, in Nepal, Heifer participant Ganga Khanal once suffered abuse from her husband and believed herself that women and girls were not as important as men.

“I used to be guilty as well in believing it was more important to educate or provide for my sons than for my daughters. But the trainings changed all that for me. Today, my daughter is in the army. She has made me realize and understand that girls are no less than boys.”

Her 17-year-old son Sudip learned that same lesson. “Looking at my mom, I have changed my view of women, and I have so much more respect for them and confidence in them. I used to laugh at them sitting in their groups and thought they would never do anything good. But just seeing them grow through the years through the project and seeing them buy land, build community buildings, form businesses, it’s just been so overwhelming.

“I have so much respect for these women who have created opportunities for people like me,” Sudip said. “The future looks bright for us because of our moms.”

Development organizations, women’s rights groups and governments should all take this moment in history at its full weight. Change is already happening.
