Tigwirizane, Luanshya District, Zambia â Heifer beneficiary family. Head of household, Billy Nzobo, his wife Nestry. Old child identified is pink dress girl, Thandiwe Nzobo. Impressive example of how a family can multiply their cattle stock from 2 cows from Heifer. In 2004 got 2 cows. Now have 16 cows and five males. One cow has given 5 calves, all female and two original cows that are still around are pregnant. Billy passed on 2 heifers in 2005. He sold 1 heifer and bought roofing sheets for whole house and then sold a male cow and bought engine and pump for water for drinking and gardening. He wanted to expand his farm and vegetable capacity, so bought bull calves for plowing. The families crops include corn, garden vegetables, onion, tomatoes, Irish potatoes, grass for cattle fodder. His milking cows zero-graze according to the Heifer training model. The money earned over the last few years has enabled him to send all of children to school, purchase bicycles, and household goods like dishes, a TV set, and chairs to sit in. He gets 20 liters of milk per day, 2,000 Zambian kwacha per liter. âWe didnât have anything here before Heifer animals, â Billy Nzobo said. âMy animals donât get sick. God has blessed me. I follow the instructions given in training. This is where God has come in.â Asked what advice he had for other beneficiaries about to receive Heifer animals, he said âIâd tell them the animals bring a lot of good things. If you have problems, just having an animal lessens the burdens in life.â Quote from Billyâs wife Nestry Nzobo, âWe see a lot of difference in terms of nutrition. (We are) now able to raise more crops because of cattle. Children drink milk now, and we never used to have tea before we received animals from Heifer. Used to have two meals a day at best, now we have three.â Images #034 – 035, the engine water pump the family bought with funds from cows to pull in water for their crop fields during the dry season.
