Fandene, Senegal â Heifer beneficiary sheep in Fandene. The female sheep are a local breed, called tulaabir, the Rams (males) are a new variety, called ladoun. They will produce bigger sheep that will fetch more money. Now, with this new breeding strategy, a 5-month old is as big as the sheep they had at 5 years old, before Heifer involvement. The sheep eat ground nut (peanut) weeds and leucaena, a shade tree that is good for strengthening soil also. The Heifer sheep housing protects from wind, disease. The community provided wood and water, while Heifer provided the cement and metal roof. Senegal is also 95% Muslim country. Sheep were historically a part of this country. They are sacrificed for annual festivities. The pen also is locked providing security from robbers. Future project for Heifer in Fandene: chickens. (Project # 21-1702-01)
