Did you give your mom a Heifer Mother’s Day gift yesterday? How did she like it? Or did you receive a Heifer Mother’s Day gift? What did you get?
Tell us about it in the comments section below. And keep you eyes out for unique Father’s Day gifts coming soon from Heifer! We’ve got you covered.

A few years ago it became plain that my mother already owns just about everything she needs or wants at this stage of her life. So rather than continuing to burden her with possessions–and the obligation to be polite about receiving more stuff she doesn’t need or want–I asked her if she would mind my making a gift in her name to Heifer on birthdays and holidays. It was a perfect idea, as she was a farmer’s daughter, my late father was from Arkansas, and mother’s family remains active in the Brethren community in which Heifer has its origins. So for the past few years on Xmas and Mothers Day and her birthday, I’ve been sending chickens and geese and pigs around the world in her name. She enjoys receiving the acknowledgment cards from HI. This Xmas, I’m sending a water buffalo in her name. My 4’11″ mother will get a kick out of that.
That’s fantastic, Don! I need to work harder to catch my family–who certainly have more than everything they need–up to giving like this. Thanks for your ongoing support. A water buffalo is very impressive!
At my request I has a flock of chickens and a flock of ducks given in my honor. When I posted on FB all of my friends they thought the gift was fitting and they all loved the idea. Hopefully more people will continue to give. We thoroughly enjoyed touring your green building when we lived in Arkansas, but never had the chance to visit the farm. I feel honored to get to be a part of such a wonderful organization and I’m encouraging my church to support your efforts to provide communities with substainable sources of food.
That’s awesome, Marye! Thanks for requesting Heifer. You’ll definitely need to carve out time to visit Heifer Ranch the next time you’re in Arkansas.
