Eduardo Stein Barillas
Dr. Eduardo Stein joined the Heifer International Board of Directors in February 2014 as a director at large residing in the Americas region. Stein served as the Vice President of the Republic of Guatemala from 2004 to 2008.
As Vice President, Dr. Stein was responsible for coordinating Guatemala's cabinets. His agenda focused on social development, indigenous issues and agricultural and rural development. He also chaired the National Council for Science and Technology. Dr. Stein negotiated thousands of land conflicts in Guatemala, commissioned a survey to find an end to racism in his country, implemented a system to identify areas prone to hunger and food insecurity, and worked to see the needs of the people in those regions were met.
Before his tenure as Vice President, Dr. Stein served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1996 – 2000. In that capacity, he was part of an international commission on state sovereignty that influenced United Nations doctrine, has worked for social security reform in Panama and served as an adviser in Peru. He has extensive experience in academic, multilateral affairs and development issues.
Dr. Stein is currently an independent consultant, and coordinates the Central American Network and Advocacy Thought Centers (LARED). He advises the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in Honduras, and is a member of the Association for Research and Social Studies in Guatemala.
