Carolyn House Stewart
Carolyn House Stewart serves on the Board as an at-large director.
Stewart is an attorney and former shareholder at the law firm of Macfarlane Ferguson & McMullen, one of Florida’s oldest law firms, where she has worked since 1994. There, she handled the firm’s civil litigation, casualty and labor law sections.
Stewart served as the international president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from 2010 until July 2014. She chose “Global Leadership through Timeless Service” as the sorority’s programmatic theme during these years, and Heifer International was the recipient of those fundraising efforts. During Stewart's four year term of office, AKA members volunteered over 6 million hours of service and impacted the lives of 24 million people through program initiatives. AKA has chapters in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, Nassau, Japan, South Korea and on the continent of Africa.
Stewart’s professional achievements have earned her numerous awards including the 2006 Florida Commission on the Status of Women “Achievement Award,” The National Bar Association Presidential Award and the Francisco Rodriguez Award from the George Edgecomb Bar Association. The National Bar Association honored Stewart with the Gertrude E. Rush Award in 2012 and Presidential Award in 2006. She was presented the Sadie T. M. Alexander Award from the National Black Law Students Association. Stewart is also the recipient of the Legacy Award from United Negro College Fund for support of education and a former UNCF board member.
Stewart’s 35-year legal career began after graduating from the University of South Carolina Law Center. She also holds a bachelor’s in History and Social Science Education from the University of South Florida.
Stewart’s 35-year legal career began after graduating with a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina Law Center. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1978. She practiced before the US District Courts for the Middle and Southern District of Florida and the US Court of Appeals for the 11th and 5th Circuits. Attorney Stewart is also licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
